I've always kicked the ball of owning a 4.0, but I would put about 4-5k miles a year easily. I put that on my .2GT3 in less than 8 months lol

so I think a 3.8RS is a better buy for me, eventually

Everyone wants 4.0 for the engine, I want it for the chassis tweaks. Not night and day, but they do make a difference in a critical area: Driver confidence. The 4.0 chassis achieves something that has nothing to do with percentages and on-paper performance: It is better sorted, more approachable, does a better job of keeping the tires in better contact, and provides crystal clear feedback to the driver. On smooth pavement, or with a full pro at the wheel, I am not sure how much the difference would be. But for this mere mortal, on real-world back roads, the 4.0 is in a different category of fun and pace—and not as a result of its engine. On the old loop, I had to stop not once, but twice, to let air out of the rear tires—a first for me away from the track. Yet I felt safer at that pace than I had in the 3.8 on the same road. 4.0 was also quite good in the rain once the tires were up to temp. Got into a 991.1S that day, and immediately wanted to be back in the RS 4.0. These are not quantifiables, but they make a difference. At least for me. I like the 997 RS 3.8. I lust after the 997 RS 4.0. One is in my top five modern Porsches, the other is not.
Did the 997 RS 4.0 have different suspension components from the 3.8 or was it just differently aligned (set up) from the factory? One gt3/rs could feel like a night and day vs another (of the same model) due to different alignment setups.

Yes, some change to suspension spec. Not in architecture but it is rose jointed, different spring rates with helper springs. There is a thread on this in this forum..

I believe the 4.0 had monoballs in a lot of places where the 3.8 had rubber.

Is it a no lose proposition period?
The 3.8 is so good I would stay with it if the 4.0 is an uncomfortable financial stretch.

Increased coil pitch of the front springs to save weight.
Helper springs at the rear with shorter, lighter main springs.
Ball joints on the lower rear arms, tie rods and tie bar connections on the body and the spring strut on the wheel carrier.
Different spring and damper rates and toe and camber settings.

edited for you.

you have a 3.8 - imo as a 4.0 owner, it's not worth stretching financially for one over your current car and you'd only end up enjoying it less due to being more precious about mileage and the car itself. Spend 10-15k (ie a fraction of the price difference) in fully reversible suspension changes on your 3.8rs and you'll have a car that will be much better than OEM 4.0 anyway.

You are a man who knows these cars like no other. Impressive. I have some questions for you regarding suspension on my 3.8 RS. Would you be up for an email or chat?

Thank you you in advance..

Nice edit You're probably right and I'm basically already on that path. Your point in regard to driving and putting miles on a 4.0 making one crazy is spot on. It's already bothers me as I stack on the miles on the 3.8! Thanks for chiming in..

At Sebring in 2012 and 2013 no one really liked the 4.0 suspension any better then the 3.8.
Can’t feel the weight difference either.

Its all placebo effect.

But it not the motor. More torque and a much smoother power curve.
The 3.8 has a little hiccup in the power band.

Doesnt matter. There are only 120 in the country, 600 worldwide and it’s the best 997RS, it’s the one you want.

Then there is the even more limited 997 GT2RS.. and GT2, also very few built and rare..

I have both of these ^ cars and the 3.8RS and they are good, but if I were smart enough I would bought the 4.0 when the prices were reasonable. IMO the 3.8 is a more fun car since you don't have to restrain yourself where as the GT2 variants are too much for the street...

TRAKCAR, I have been wanting to post this question to you for many years. Did you run one summer weekend ~2012(?) at Autobahn in Joliet? I remember a guy with a white GT3RS with Florida license plate TRAKCAR (sp?)...I used to run a white GT2 with white motorsport cage...

Random 4.0 question not worth a new thread.. are the front flares molded? or part Cup flares? They don't look like the .2 RS, and I hadn't noticed this before.
