For what it is, the 4.0 has a superb engine and even now comparing the SportAuto dyno per Petevb in another thread here, the old unit isn't giving very much at all away to the newest shiniest 991.2gt3 engine.
Found the chart compiled and posted by Petevb:

Not bad that the RS 4.0 is still right up with the best six years later.

I wonder if that's an artificial flattening of the 991.2 GT3 at 500hp to allow an easy extra for the RS.

Entirely likely I'd say. Tweak the torque dropping away at high revs a bit, raise the revs to 9250, et voila, 525PS at 8500 rpm peak power for the .2 RS

A little ECU exercise for 991.2 GT3 owners.

There is a big dip in torque for the 991.2 engine from 3500rpm - 5000rpm, I wonder why??

Why are the 997 4.0 curves so much smoother than the others?

Appreciate your thoughts. Happy Holidays - all the feedback only reinforces the differences of these two machines. I have raced at amateur level and instructed with PCA GT3s and RSs and w BMW CCA with M3s of ever generation. The 997.1 was the first RS to to the US. It is edgy and feels like I'm driving a washing machine with cage rattle, coil over squeeks, tramming w camber, etc. It is pure heaven. I applaud Porsche for coming back to a manual box for GT3 buyers even though future RS will never be anything but PDK. This makes the 997 RS even more unique. Unfortunately, it is a money thing. I am wealthy only with my desire to drive these machines at the limit - Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, Tremblant, Mosport. The 991.2 is fabulous with all the bits, styling, and the 911 GT3 R motor now being the only non turbo in the entire line. Wish I could have both. Economics will force me to keep 997 RS. My last Porsche cup race was years ago and I'm now needing to hang on to the classics. Cheers to you all - drive passionately.

An RS just by its presence, tells you its a much special car than my 991 GT3. And being it as a PDK, did not put that much involvement to me.

A 991 GT3 is a very nice Porsche and it will surely have its own following.
Just the comment I was looking for. I am continually intrigued by the 997.2 GT3 RS. I came close to picking up a higher mileage example but ended up settling on another Gen-1 Spyder. Very happy for now but... given the current shortage of 991.2 GT3's I've gone back to stalking RS's. From your comments it may be the holy grail, one the car to keep if you have one. But what about buying one now? The prices seem high, one local example on the market for $188K USDs.

Give this price, would you jump in again? Guys are lamented selling their RS's but why not jump back in?

Your thoughts appreciated.

I don't know the American market but after peaking in mid-2015 the Euro market dropped back a bit over the following year and has been flat since so given that the 997.2 RS is arguably the best driver's car ever made I think the next move is more likely to be up than down. If the 991.2 GT3 RS does not have a manual option it is likely the 997.2 will be the last manual RS, which should boost its prices.
