Default Does the m96 997.1 have swirl pots in the oil sump?

Pulling the oil pan with @wayne smith this morning and all looks good except for a mystery: the videos of Jake Raby pulling the pan on the 996 show two swirl pots in the sump used to de-airate the oil. My 997.1 only has two tubes at the top of the sump, but no swirl pots. Was this a update in the 997...?

Yes those are the replacement return tubes. believed to speed oil drainback at the expense of some foaming

Thanks Quadcammer! Yes the best I can tell the design was updated in the M96/05 and M97/01 from the larger M96/01-04 swirl pots, but the Workshop manual and PET catalog weren't updated to show the new design. We went over the parts department at the local dealer to try and confirm but they were stumped as well.

Here is a picture of the old (right) vs new (left) design.

The only place i was able to find a reference to the update was the 997 Porsche Excellence book, however it only mentions the M97/01 engine.

Looks like mystery solved.

From ...

it looks like replacing the new design with the old (996 swirl pots) might be favored. That, and the addition of a baffle plate.

Any chunks found? Dead chipmunks?

Looks pretty clean..... ads on TV and other media tells us this place should be all gunked up by now requiring flushes with mystery fluids.

Edit: oops saw your earlier thread.... thanx for the writeups. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...-debris-2.html

It was anticlimactic. Inside was clean and the rubber baffle windows were in perfect shape. We think it was the first time the pan was ever opened.

I did satisfy my OCD urges by spending 30 minutes cleaning the outside of the pan with a tooth brush. I had seen a recommendation to use a scotchbright pad but would not recommend. It breaks up on the rough metal and makes a mess.
