Default 997.2 Coil Packs

I recently got stranded about 100 miles from home in Atlanta do to transmission and engine alerts and a rough running engine. After have her towed in to Jim Ellis Porsche, it turns out it was No 5 cylinder coil pack. All covered under the CPO (which runs out in Sept) so all is good but wondering if this is a common issues with the 997.2? I have 53,000 miles with no past issues. I understand the 996's had this issue but have not found any common issues with the 997.2.

Thanks

Bob

Pretty common to replace coil packs and plugs at 45 or 50K miles. at 53K miles, it not unexpected.

That's not great news on the coil pack, the dealer cost is about $300, $75 for the part and the rest labor. Mine was CPO so no worry. It doesn't look that difficult so if it happens and no warranty, I'll do a DIY.

Early coil packs were modified to a different part number. I've got 97K miles on mine without a problem.

That being said, I'm in Northern California and rain is the most they see. Snow and ice may take more of a toll. Especially with salt involved.

In hignsite it might have been wise to replace the other two while the muffler was off. Wish the dealer had mentioned that. I'm seldom in the rain and no snow. When in replace the plugs next at I believe 80k I'll replace all 6 then to be safe.

2009 C2S 114K miles - daily driver in Philly winter and salt.

This thread is the first I really heard of 997.2 coils going bad.... As I understand it, Porsche redesigned them to last longer.... and it sure appears they did. I would not go so far as to now say they are a preventative maintenance item under 100K miles. I will be doing another plug change at 120K in a few months and have no plans to swap them out. Heck, even my 2000 Boxster S, a daily driver in winter salt didn't need coils until circa 150K miles.

I am acting on the bet that coils will, for the vast majority of us, last at least to 160K, a plug service interval. Of course, if one of my coils failed tomorrow, I would probably change my mind... but that is my plan.

Peace

They don't fail at the rate of most cars (porsche included) but they do fail. It can be hit and miss with coil failures.

Sure would like to see a photo of a failed 997.2 coil, is it cracked and swelled up like a typical 997.1 failed coil?
