Default .1 .2 Numbering System?

Would someone be kind enough to explain to me the 997.1 997.2 etc numbering system? I have an 04 Carrera, is that a 996.1? I know in my Avatar I put C2 but can't remember why or how I knew that... Thanks, Ralph

I've been using a similar system for years.

I started at 29, then 29.1, 29.2....etc. When I reached .9 I went to an alpha-numeric system: 29.9a, 29.9b....you get the idea

Seriously - it's a great question.

We bought a 2016 991 GT3RS. It's the first RS of the 991 platform. The next one is being referred to as the 991.2 GT3RS. That makes our car a 991.1

Maybe I've answered your question - but I will wait for someone who knows to chime in.

.1 means 1st version of a given generation and .2 means the faced-lifted version of that usually released 4 years later.

996 - 996.1 from 1999 to 2001. 996.2 from 2002 to 2004

997 - 997.1 from 2005 to 2008. 997.2 from 2009 to 2011

IIRC the .x designation started in the forums with the 997 gen, but it applies to the 996, and now the 991 and beyond.

Rporzio,

Pretty easy answer! Each Porsche 911 (or really any car model) has an internal designation Porsche has named the 1998-2004 internally the 996, 2005-2012 the 997, etc.

The .1 and .2 are also designations for the mid-model refresh. So the Porsche 997 from 2005-2008 was the 997.1 and the 2009-2012 Porsche was the 997.2

Nothing really special about the names aside from it making it more clear to who ever you are talking to about the car. Every car nerd has these inside names and specs for their car if you look at any enthusiast subculture website.

For GT4 - since the 981 only had a single version - is it considered a 981.1 GT4, or just a 981 GT4? Do you put the .1 in even if there is no .2?

I believe there will be a 718 GT4 and maybe facelifted versions....but the 981 GT4 is a one-off.

Curious to know....

To further confuse things as ADias mentions above, the ".1 and .2" nomenclature is not always used with the 996 series cars. The first generation 996 cars are typically known as MK I cars, and The facelift cars are known as MK II cars.
