911 Road Ettiquete: To Wave or Not to Wave?

I recently rented a U-Haul to move some furniture.
On a 2 lane highway a U-Haul passes me going in the other direction.
Dude waves so I wave back.
I thought. .. wow... us truckers sure are friendly
My wife driving in the car behind me saw the dude wave at me.
She busted her gut laughing.
If someone waves I'll wave back but Toronto is a pretty stuck up unfriendly city so I never offer the first wave.

If I see a 911 I generally wave, though if it's a 991 convertible....I might not - can't stand the look of them.

Interesting responses. I'm in NY / Manahttan and we've got a lot of P cars around here. I've a 991.1 C4S and it is my DD. Everyone in a 997 and older waves back or flashes lights. Ladies ( always in 991 of some sort ) never acknowledge and the guys in 991 are always hit or miss. In my head, when they guy in 991 doesn't wave back, I always think they are a snob and or don't understand. They could have gotten any other car ( in that price range ) but just happened to opt for the 911. At least, this time. On weekends, I drive 964 and the response rate is much higher. As well, I see a lot more 911 on the weekends and I think that is the point. The guy driving his 911 on the weekend loves his baby and is truly all in. It's not to say that DD porche drivers don't love their cars too - I certainly do but it brings in a different set of folks that just consider it another nice car and in a few years, it will be gone in favor for the flavor of the month.

If I see you, I'll wave. I don't expect a response but sometimes I'll get one. On my side of Phoenix 911s are a rare sight. I like to think a simple wave fosters comradery.

Nobody waves here, 911 owners are all snobby from what I've encountered.
I ride motorcycles primarily so I know what waving is about...I saw a 911 on the free way drove next to him to give a nod all he did was speed up and we're already going 75+.....so yeah whatever.
LOL.

Here in Switzerland I'd say 95% of 911 owners greet each other when passing and even give the odd thumbs up when next to each other at a crossing.
The remaining 5% are either because they don't see you OR because they bought one to be seen but have no further interrest in the brand.
I do (on and off) greet boxter drivers but it's 50/50 if I get a return wave. There are so many Cayenne' and Macan's around here so nothing special and out of the equation...

Intresting thing about the 991 guys don't. I too have noticed that. Then again, probably like 90% of those drivers are on lease and it's their first P car. Don't know better. Back when had my first P car, a new 1970 914 the deal was...those aren't real Porsches. Same deal with 944 in 80's. I'll wave and flash at any P sports variety, not the SUV and limo cars. There are a lot of them in the neighborhood so figured out the 991 deal pretty easy.
Cayenne's male or female almost never even look or wave. Macan drivers wave back a little more. Boxsters not so much but Caymans more so. Maybe a third of 911s maybe.
I got a nice wave from an Audi RS5 driver the other day and almost threw my arm out trying to quickly wave back before he was past.

I give a peace sign or small wave from the top of the steering wheel to most Porsche drivers. I gave up on the Cayenne and Panamera drivers though after experiencing zero response from those drivers. Having said that, if ever end up owning one, I would do the same as I do in the 911. Enthusiasts are enthusiasts no matter what they drive.....for the most part.

Acknowledging each other with a friendly wave is also common with motorcyclists. I suspect the drivers in the Cayennes and Macans are simply distracted, thinking more about their errands or what's on the stereo than the road. 911 drivers are far more likely to be watching the road and the cars around them.
