Default Oh God...Weird ticking sound when in neutral...997.2 C2S

2009, 911 C2S Coupe, 6SPD with 52k miles, original clutch.

Reference for sound from 0:00-0:10, goes away at back of car: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrEv...ature=youtu.be

Just had the oil, brake flush and transmission oil changed (replaced with Mobil PTX) a few days ago by reputable Indy p-car specialist.

Now getting an intermittent ticking noise, you can only hear it from 0:00-0:10 in the video. Noise isn't present until car warms up. Seems louder closer to wheel well, almost disappears at back of vehicle. never noticed it before.

Noise only occurs when in neutral - when clutch is pressed, noise stops and returns when released.

Revving masks the sound. Any ideas?

Clutch feels good, two different shops say clutch is good.

Is sound definitely new? Maybe you just noticed it. Mine sounds the exact same when idling...it is a direct injection sound. That is what dealer said. Sounds more like slack in timing chain or small valve tap.
I never checked my car to see if sound went away when clutch was pressed. 2010C4S

Maybe new, maybe not...The car is a few weeks old to me, and I didn't ever notice it before but I could be insane / paranoid.

I know the cars have all kinds of sounds, it's just the rhythmic tapping that almost sounds like an oil pan dripping (it's not, of course) that weirds me out.

Haha. Just my own paranoid hallucinations about a Porsche.

As long as the ticking isn't followed by a kaboom you're ok.

This would be an interesting point of information. If the ticking sound is related to the DFI fuel pump, why would it go away when the clutch is pressed since the fuel pump is still pumping the same while the car is still idling?

I'm thinking maybe throwout bearing in the clutch but they usually squeak or rumble when going bad, and don't tick.

Need some other responses from 6MT 997.2 owners.

2009 113K miles

Obviously very hard to diagnose but...

That is pretty much what my car sounds like for almost 100K of my ownership.... lotsa stuff going on in there..... and mine has not blown up.

When these cars started to come off warranty, the '09s, my indy dropped me a call one day and asked me about how mine sounded. He said a customer just came in with an '09 and was worried about the engine ticking. I felt better about mine after this.... and realized it is part of the 9A1 charm.

Peace

Sounds like your vacuum pump is loose and gumming up from not playing your radio loud enough

I had doubts myself when I got the car. So I recorded it to make sure I have a baseline to compare to if I hear something. It is the turbo DFI, but at idle I doubt they sound much different. Here's what it sounds like:

Interesting- I posted a similar question about 7 months ago. It was my first DFI engine so I was wondering if the ticking was normal. Still the same, no changes, and I was advised that this is normal on the forum. The car has recently been through a 60k service and later an oil change at the local Porsche dealer, and no issues noted.

Enjoy!
