Help! Between a 997.1 and 997.2
Hi, I have driven a 06' C4S cab 28K miles and a 10' C2S cab with 28K miles and love them both! $12k difference between the two. My good friend has a 06' C4S that had several electrical issues (covered by his CPO) and a IMS failure after his CPO expired that cost him many $$ in a new engine... With that said, I can add a third party extended warranty from the dealer to the 06' for and extra $3000. Now the difference is basically $9000 between the two cars. The 10' is not a CPO. The frugal side of me says save the money and buy the 06' without the warranty and hope for the best. The car is probably close to fully depreciated so I will not lose anything if I decide to sell and nothing breaks. Any thoughts on what I should do? Tough part is that I can afford to buy either car but I hate feeling like I over paid for anything! I do not want to buy a 991 as I want the feeling of driving an older car not just a push a few buttons and drive....I usually drive my 3rd car, a BMW 135 cab about 2k per year, so this will be a lightly used car just to drive to and from the golf course and on Sunday drives. Sticker on 06' is $44k, 10' $56K. Thanks for any feedback.

I would not think twice. The new, 9A1 engine in the 997.2 (what makes it a .2), is showing to be like the "bullet proof" engines of the past.

A 997 won't give you the feeling of driving an older car. If you're looking for that, you should consider an air-cooled car, or maybe a 996.

Btw the 9A1 is used in the 991.1 and the cayman gt4 also variant is used in the 991.1 GT3

Buy the car that puts a smile on your face.
It just money and just toy.
when bored with sell it and buy another.

997.2. Don't even think about it anymore.

having suffered an IMS failure in my 996, I chose a 997.2. If you go with a 997.1, the $3000 for the warranty is cheap compared to a motor replacement. Ultimately, this is a peace of mind consideration..
Other differences: the 997.2 base model has nearly the HP of a 997.1S. Also, the PCM is more advanced.

Considering you actually knew someone that had a IMS failure in a 2006 model then I would say the odds that you would suffer the same fate are pretty slim.
I would go with the one that has already hit the bottom of the depreciation curve. Ypu are talking about a pretty large price difference.
In regards to warranties. You can guarantee the warranty company is a million/billion dollar company. They got there by knowing the odds. The odds are that if you pay them $3000 for a warranty, that they will pay out considerably less for repairs. I would never play into the hand of a company stacking the odds against you, and that is what extended warranties do

The only reason to buy a .1 is limited budget. If you're comfortable spending more, limit your search to .2 models and hold out for the best one you can find.

I love our 997s and not to be the devil's advocate here, but 2k miles per year. Really, why bother? Golf clubs don't fit into them all that well and you'll just be adding insurance and service costs for no real enjoyment. Oil and brake fluid still needs to be changed, short trips that don't fully warm the motor aren't good for it, and 997s hold up a lot better when driven regularly, rather than parked. Who knows, maybe once you own it you won't be able to not drive it and it will actually be a worthwhile purchase. Good luck with your decision.
