Is Raby going to chime in and drop some knowledge or is there a waiting list for that too ?

It appears that most of the posters think you posting of a scored IMS bearing is bogus. If it is, then have a laugh on me. Happy April fools day.
However, if you have a mechanic telling you that the IMS bearing has scoring, you need to get your car and run away! The IMS bearing is a roller bearing, so there is no such phenomena as "scoring". When the bearings fail, you will get galling before they disintegrate. Not scoring.
It's all a mute point though, since for your mechanic to "observe" anything wrong with the bearing, he would have to pull the bearing from the engine, which is a bit of work. And, if he has it lying on his workbench, another $500 will give you a new bearing.
So, were you accurate in posting what the mechanic told you? Or, is this just another April fools joke!

Bore scoring is exceptionally rare in the .2 and appears correlated to cold weather starts. Think Canadian or Northern US/European winters and instances where the car is being started in very cold temps (or had a prior history of being in a cold climate getting cold weather starts).
Unless someone is starting the car in freezing weather on a regular basis I dont think this is an issue to worry about at all.

My post was to warn that a mechanic that uses terminology pertinent to journal bearings, has no idea of what he is talking about. Get a new mechanic.
