Replaced by belt today after I met another rl'er today
Needed to buy a 30 mm combination wrench to rotate tensioner to slacken belt. Hardest part was removing original belt, new one went in fairly easy. No need to remove bumper as when you remove the licence plate bracket there is indeed a glory hole to access the motor bracket separator. I made a simple diagram showing belt routing to assist in new placement.
Cleaned the throttlebody as well, it was not that dirty. 70,000km
Replaced airfilters which were quite dirty and were previousy replaced at 59,000 km by original owners dealer. Im not sure what the interval is on air filters but I will be doing them again in 10,000 km.
It does seem to have a little smoother/better idle. But it wasnt bad before hand. Spark plugs are next on the list
Glory hole
Routing belt, note dark throttlebody
Throttle body cleaned and back in place after removal
Old 11,000km airfilters vs new

Just had my original 2006 drive belt replacement at 66,000 KM (41,000 miles) 11 years later. The old belt is showing very little sign of wear.... The tech reported no license plate and/or bumper removal was necessary.... I don't know how he did it and I didn't ask as I was in a hurry to get out of there... cost C$205 (U$155) part + labor

I have the official repair manual for the 997.2. Three steps
1-remove air box
2-rotate tensioner clockwise and remove belt from pulleys
3-remove engine support bolt through rear bumper and pull out belt
For some reason says to remove the belt before the bolt
Oh-and the video on line in German with the guy who I loosens the torx bolt on the tensioner - is wrong. You don't need to unloosen it

Thank goodness no need to loosen that bolt. Looked to be a PITA to do that. Changed the job from 1 beer to a 6pack.
Now, back down to a six pack....

finger on spacer that needs to be removed. not a lot of room to get a socket wrench in there
silver 16 mm socket on spacer bolt accessed thru glory hole. 4 screws to remove licence plate will access this hidden hole
30mm wrench on tensor rotated clockwise so belt can be removed and installed

another drive belt after 2 years?!
Hi - My '06 997S is in for 2yr service interval.
Just got a call stating drive belt showing signs of cracking and should be replaced @ $270. I ok'd it.
Then checked my files and see they replaced it 2 years ago during the last service. Car has had 3,000 miles in 2 years and is garage stored in the SF Bay Area.
Is it possible for the belt to be cracking? sounds like i'm getting screwed either now or prior service (both from same dealer).
Would love some guidance from the pros here...thx

No way the belt degraded like that in two years unless the first time they installed a very old belt that had been sitting for years in a very hot place. More likely they either didn't actually change it the first time or someone is screwing you this time. In any case I think they owe you a freebie on this one. If they try to claim this is normal, I'd first speak to the General Manager at the dealership, then suggest telling them you will be contacting Porsche NA to discuss this and then do it if they don't back off. That's just wrong!

I just did the belt on my 997.2.
Wound up buying two new tools: 30mm open end wrench and one of those object grabber thingies so I could extract the engine spacer bolt out through the glory hole behind the license plate.
Get the 30mm wrench from Home Depot. It's $9.99. The same thing at Lowe's was >$30!
The hardest part was getting the damn airbox back into place and fitting the rubber intake coupler that joins the airbox and throttle body together. It's a super tight fit. I got frustrated at one point and wound up breaking the plastic pegs that holds the airbox in place (the one closest to the latch that holds the trunk lid shut). $2.50 part I have to special order now :P
