Have a local machine shop turn you a tube to fit, can also have 2 piece style with a plunger to eject it from tube.

Great news! Sounds like a great rebuild plan. I can help with the wrist pin tool. I have a CNC lathe and bridgeport mill. I'm sure we can fab something up.

Would love to share notes with you as you go...

After taking the case and pistons to the machine shop and chatting with a few local Porsche engine shops, we are pretty comfortable in a stuck ring diagnosis. There was some sludgy build up in the grooves of several pistons, and no other issues were found. We are going for a full rebuild with Nickies. The case is at the machine shop now, and we will be doing the reassembly once it comes back. I'm hoping to find a reasonably priced wrist pin and clip installation tool, but have not had any luck as of yet.

The heads have been checked and cleaned by the machine shop, and have passed muster with no issues.

Oh, and we are going 4.0 on the rebuild.

Wow. That's a great offer. I'd love buy or rent the "right" for this job, but the cost to buy new doesn't work for a one time use, and used tools or rentals just do not exist. That means that the option to make something becomes a viable option.

Will keep you posted on progress. Thanks!

Sorry to disappoint, but nothing to report. Heads are ready to go, but case is still off getting sleeved.
I did, however, find a nearby shop that is willing to loan the wrist pin tool.

Goal is to getting going for a local event on September 30, so I have time...even at my glacial pace.

In other news, the transmission in my daily driver 2003 S8 is no longer shifting correctly, so I will be swapping that out with a spare of questionable quality. Oye.

Who's doing the sleeving? Wet or dry? Which sleeve?

Going with Nickies. The shop is sourcing them. Have not decided on pistons yet. I'm not sure how they are doing the install or, for that matter, when. Spring time is a hell of a time to get anything done.

At some point I need to get a list together (gasket set, IMS bearing, main and rod bearings, hardware, waterpump, etc.

I'm very curious about the wrist pin tool. It may make sense to try knock off a copy while I have it.

Mid-June update:

Decided to back it off to 3.8, as machine shop says their supplier recommends upgrading rods to go 4.0. Really trying to stay dependable and reasonable on costs, so 3.8 it is. Parts are on order, but are delayed for a week or so. Hopefully the shop will have bandwidth when the parts arrive.

Meanwhile, I'm going to start ordering parts. Crank and rod bearings, chains, guides, gaskets, hardware, yada, yada. Anyone have a parts list laying around for a fairly complete refresh?

Hopefully you won't need to replace the crank as it is close to $5k.

LNE made no such recommendation (new rods) when I did my 4.0. I specifically asked them about it also.

So you have stock internals? Just the 4.0 pistons and sleeves? No issues? How long has it been? Thanks.

I have the LNE 4.0 Nickies setup. All ARP hardware inside my block. LNE coated bearings inside also. LNE Billet IMS paddle, and Jakes linked timing chains.

Will be approaching 10k km this summer on my rebuild. Rods have 112k km on them.

Interesting. When Jake did my rebuild he installed new OEM rods which were part of the package.
