Mine looked like this when my indy gave the car back.

Stick your cell phone on video and get a shot of your suspected leaky tank.
That vertical crack is exactly where mine is although mine isn't leaking yet. I wonder if on reinstalling a new one if a thin aluminum shield in that area would help. The tank would still pressurize the same but perhaps heat from the outside would be reduced

Same crack without leakage for me also. Replaced as preventative. Not a fun job but doable with patience. Would go much faster second time around. Hope that day never comes.
So when I was replacing the water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, air filter and generally cleaning up the engine bay - guess what I noticed? I guess I need to order a replacement and swap it out now rather then fill up with coolant and check for leaks from the new water pump and thermostat.
Audi and Porsche must use the same supplier for coolant tanks. The B6 and B7 S4 were prone to cracked tanks too. When my 4 year service come up in December I'm going to have mine replaced just for peace of mind. I have an 09 and the lifespan of the seems to be 8 to 10 years.
Yep, I had the same crack although mine had yet to leak. New tank going in did not look any different in design however so hoping this won't repeat itself down the line.
Hardest part is aligning the keyed bracket as your getting the old out and new one in. Pull out only 1 inch or so then push down to dis engage.
Did the tank replacement today. Already had car up on jacks for water pump and thermostat replacement, as well as air filter housing removed. That saved me half an hr or so. I ended up dropping the engine about 2" or so - maybe a bit more. That helped make more room. I also have a cable-style clamp removal/installation tool which makes the task of reaching all of those unreachable clamps possible.
Edit: added pics. Looks like the failure location on the tank is very consistent.

I have been having a coolant smell around my '06 C4S for a while. I found this thread yesterday and went out to check out my coolant tank. I found it to have the same white lines mentioned, so I assume it is cracked. I ordered a new one from Pelican.
This forum is great for us that maintain their own cars. I continue to learn things about my car every day!
any .2 owners notice their coolant seems low, I topped mine off recently and it was well below MIN line, although I see no residue on the cap (newer model cap). Is slight coolant loss a symptom of the crack? I will have a look now that I know where to look.

i just filled about 1L yesterday, new to the 997.2, so will keep an eye on it. has anyone considered using JB weld to keep tank from further cracking or spreading? I recall reading about it during BMW days as a recommended hack to keep fragile section together for longer...
Only Porsche would design a coolant reservoir tank that requires you to lower the engine to replace. Had mine replaced when motor mounts were being replaced. Expensive if done by the dealership (don't ask me how I know).

I did my coolant reservoir on my '06 4S today. It went really well once I got the motor dropped far enough for clearance. It took three hours, of which over 2 hours was spent on just getting the old tank out.
Mine had the typical crack that everyone mentions.
