HELP / MAYDAY - PURCHASE QUESTION
Hi Everyone,,
Newb here. Trying to purchase my first Porsche. A 2007 911 Turbo, 6sp manual w/ 48K miles. However, PPI looked great until I started to review the DME report. The following appeared (1307 total operating hours):
Range 1: 13072
Range 2: 2318
Range 3: 394
Range 4: 99
Range 5: 5
Range 6: 1
Range 1: 1299.6 H
Range 2: 1299.6 H
Range 3: 1257.70 H
Range 4: 1193.5 H
Range 5: 1193.5 H
Range 6: 251.40 H
I'm not too concerned about range 6 as it occurred over 1000 hours ago. However, the numerous Range 1 and the amount in Range 4 & 5 are concerning to me. Owner insists car has been well cared (just came off of CPO) and is in pristine shape.
Thoughts? Recommendations? would be greatly appreciated.

Range 1 + 2 are at or below the redline so don't worry about them.
Read this article - http://www.911virgin.com/porsche/rev-range-information/ a valuable resource explaining the ranges and Porsches CPO rules around cars with ignitions in the higher ranges.

This is totally irrelevant imo, what do you expect him to say..."well yeah I bought the car cpo'ed and then I threw a tune on it and beat the **** out of it until just now when the cpo ran out"..or something along those lines.
Just a thought, good luck with your search

Those range 4 & 5s being only 100 hours ago are a bit too recent for my comfort level if it was a car I was looking to buy. It's almost impossible to get a single overrev in a range, so consider the range 6 an anomaly. This car has been driven hard from that report. Whether it's knew you want is up to you.

Make a call or two regarding an extended warranty and see if you can get one and at a reasonable price, then if an in depth PPI (not just a basic one, but borescope, fluid samples, etc) comes back clean, decide if this is the one...I however would walk on this one, it's just starting the experience off on the wrong foot.
Good Luck!

This is just an observation . . . The rev-limiter should be able to prevent Range 4, 5 and 6 readings. I wonder if they could even occur in 1st gear (I over-revved in 1st once and got 1 Range 3 ignition which was probably a ghost reading). And if you can't over-rev to 5 or 6 due to the rev-limiter then they would have to occur on the downshift. Bear in mind, these are ignitions per cylinder and occur exceptionally quickly. I don't know, but are so few ignitions on a single downshift even possible; if you missed a shift or did so improperly could you end up with only 1 or 5 ignitions? (That's not rhetorical, it is a question.) The range 3 and 4 are a little more concerning though (and only a deal breaker based on your comfort level). If you look at the big picture instead of ignitions in each range, as others have said, the car has been driven hard (and given it's a Turbo, fast). I don't know the answer to the DME concern, but maybe the more salient question to ask, given you are comfortable with the DME, is what type of things may fail or need repair given that the car has been driven so hard (and have said items been attended to as may be evidenced in any available service records). Best of luck, and remember, there are lots of 911s out there that are total garage queens (sad to admit, and it's not for a lack of trying, but mine is one of them).

Discuss the DME results and your concerns with the seller and see if he or she is willing to provide more information. Walk away if you detect any dishonesty in the response or lack there of.
