Default DIY Oil change

I'm about to do my first 997.2 oil change and really want to avoid an overfill- so thought is to measure the oil that comes out and replace with that quantity as the starting point.

Anyone have any tricks for the easiest/cleanest way to measure the used oil?

I just fill a couple of quarts less than the capacity, if you are draining all the oil and doing a filter change that's a good place to be. Takes a couple of top offs to get you to where you want to be without overfilling.

Suggestion You are dealing with 8 1/2 quarts of oil (most oil containers are graduated in liters or mili liters) What you do not want to do is overfill. So I suggest you creep up on "full" like suggested above
You can drive all day being 1/2 quart low but you don't want to be 1/2 over. Remember oil must be checked hot (because it expands when hot) so allow for that(full when cold means, generally overfull when hot)

I drained for an hr.. added 7.5, warmed it up and it needed another .5 quarts.

If it takes 8.5, I guess I need to drain longer next time. Oh well, not a huge deal.

Add 8 quarts first time. The tot rate as stated above. Then save the empty jugs. Next time you will have them to dump the used oil in, measure it, and then in a container you can just leave at the auto parts store for recycling.

Plus the emptys look cool on the shelf between oil changes.

On my 09 C2 I drain for about an hour and fill with 8 litres of oil. Shows up a bit below max when I've warmed it up. Never got into the measuring hot dirty oil thing.

2010 C4S ...

I made measurement marks on my oil catch basin by adding a quart of water at a time. I always measure what I take out, and put back the same. I've done this a dozen times in the last two years over the course of 55K miles. Every time, whether I drain an hour or overnight, I take out 7.5 quarts and add 7.5 quarts. I put the oil back into the 5 quart empties as a secondary measurement check.

I keep the oil one bar down from full.

I also heat the oil to full temp before draining.

Um, here's a novel idea. Why not look in the manual and put in the amount of oil recommended for your car? if it calls for 8 quarts, put 8 quarts in. I guarantee if it calls for 8 quarts and that how much you put in, it's not going to read 10 quarts on the gauge.

Make sure the oil's warm before you drain - draining the old oil seems to take the most time of any step in this process. Then I fill it with 7.5 quarts and top off as necessary to make the on board display happy.

Keep a rag handy for any excess oil coming out of the filter you replace.

this is not rocket science dudes. if its taking you longer than 20 minutes you're doing it wrong. remove oil and filter, replace.... draining for an hour, really?

It's surely not necessarily. However, I only change once a year so while it's draining I change the air filters, clean the engine area, change pollen filter and flush brakes.
