Default 997.1-check oil level when hot or at ambient temperature

My owner's manual talks about checking it after refuelling which would mean when warm/hot. The car is programmend to display this.
I have also read that it should be checked when the engine is cold.
Which is correct?

Follow your owners manual.
Should be checked after the car has been driven at normal operating temps / pressures for a few minutes at least.
I normally give it a quick check every 3'rd or 4'th fillup.

Unless the stupid countdown is over 1 minute...thats so annoying....

usually takes 20 minutes driving or 10 mi before oil is normal

I've been checking 5 minutes after shutdown and the next morning. They're always the same reading. That was my way of confirming what the manual says. I can't help myself lol.

If you're checking the oil on another car that has a dipstick, the best measurement is before you've driven, with the engine cold and the oil uncirculated.

Since the measuring system in the Porsche is electronic, I'd go with the manual, which states to check it after the car has warmed up. You'll get a more accurate reading and, as 19VFB19 mentioned, if the engine hasn't warmed up, the wait time for the reading is just annoyingly long.

It never fails--when I try to check my oil level at a red light, the light will turn green with the countdown still at about 5 seconds.

Not sure what year you have but I've never had to wait on a cold engine. On my 2006 C2S the wait time in the morning is an amazingly short 6 seconds, every time. Cold engine, key in ignition, one click to the right without turning the engine on, and a 6 second countdown. After the oil level displays I start the engine.

Weird. I have to admit that I've never checked it before turning the car on.

I wonder if the reading you get first thing in the morning before you start the car is the legacy reading from when the car was last running?

Now I'm going to have to try that... .

The manual for my RND engine says to check oil at ambient temp. I surmise that is to absolutely guarantee all the oil has drained back into the crankcase, as overfilling these engines is especially detrimental compared to most others. Probably it would be ok to check it hot, provided it sat long enough for all the oil to drain back, but RND's way makes it less vulnerable to user judgment. It's similar to why the label on meds is usually written as "to be taken every twelve hours" instead of "to be taken twice a day".

Mine works exactly like this.....if I check it at a gas station the countdown is sometimes 15 minutes.

My count down is around 5 mins after a 20 mins or so drive. I usually check the oil in my garage after a trip home.
