It also depends on what you want the car for.

Example:

9a1 turbos: much less expensive engine. Blow an engine and pay almost half of what a mezger will cost you. Generally perceived to be very reliable, with half as many parts as mezger. Obvious plus being: parts overall on the car will not be as old, don't have to worry as much about age determined gremlins. Pcm will be much better, but stil out of date compared to most other cars. If it matters to you, I have driven many Pcm equipped pre 2009 Porsches, and own a 2009 c2s. The 09 c2s I find meets my needs perfectly and the others are extremely lack luster.

Mezger: the engine you want to go to if you are looking to build future power. Don't get tiptronic for various reasons (resale, just not as fun as pdk or 6mt). Downside is most will have seriously bad version of Pcm if that matters to you.

So imo, get the mezger 997.1 If you want 6mt, want to build power down the line (as much as u want), and don't care much for infotainment.

Get the the newer models if you don't intend to make lots of engine mods (though ruf says the 9a1 has decent potential up to 650 hp) and just want to enjoy the damn thing.

either way your car will be awesome.

PCM 2.1 is clearly out of date, as is PCM 3.0. There is a belief that 3.0 is better in all respects, but it's simply not the case. PCM 3.0 certainly has a bigger, better screen. It also has more information available and it looks cleaner with fewer buttons and controls. It's very nice. One the downside, there are frequent reports of it not working with iPhones. It also doesn't stream music via Bluetooth.

The things that I like better about PCM 2.1 are: It has ***** instead of a touchscreen. I don't like touchscreens and all the associated fingerprints. PCM 2.1 can be easily updated in a simple DIY procedure. All you have to do is buy the new map discs and update it in your driveway. PCM 3.0 requires an expensive trip to the dealer to update the maps. Bluetooth streaming audio can easily be added to 2.1 with a system like Mobridge or Denison. It's not that easy with 3.0.

Again; they are both out of date. If this is something that really matters to you, then you should consider an aftermarket unit whether you get 2.1 or 3.0. The reason that I made this post is that 2.1 isn't as bad as it seems. It shouldn't be a deal breaker. I have the latest maps and it gets me where I need to go every time. If I want something more sophisticated, I simply connect to my iPhone via Bluetooth and use a navigation map. The voice prompts can be heard through the speakers.

I would have no issue at all buying a car equipped with PCM 2.1.

I have pcm 3.0, have driven many with the older Pcm.

my iPhone works great with pcm3, even all the functionality via control ***** on steering wheel selector.

i agree with you the pcm2.1 can be improved/enjoyed. I've just found the 3.0 to be way more satisfying for me,with the good looking touchscreen/less buttons and all.

All I use it for is Bluetooth and satellite radio. I enjoy both on ocassion with no issues.

Looking in 60s low 70s....versus a 991s or 4s. Money is close. I'm a 997 fan just thinking of keeping the car and a turbo would be killer. Long term more of a revered car perhaps than a similarly priced 991.1.......

2009 C2S

The demise of Porsche from wrecking the 911 is an oft recited tome. Oddly, I thought it was silly when I got into these cars 16 years ago.... now I am one of those. But a buyer of a "good" one has some issues:

1 - The air cooled are simply old cars and you will be buying all the problems that go with it.... Porsche hasn't solved for entropy. Plus, their values have shot up and are in stupid territory IMO
2 - The first water cooled with the M96/97 just don't have engines that inspire faith.
3 - The first water cooled, turbos and GT3s, have the old "Metzger" block up until the 997.2 and have the "good" engine
4 - The 996s are raw and way more sports-car like of the water cooled
5 - THe 997.1 is an improvement IMO and not a retreat
6 - The 997.2 is fantastic regarding its new DFI engine that is showing to be a great engine.... but the chassis has been dumbed down
7 - 991 .. electric steering, larger chassis, longer wheel base... dumbed down even more... yuck

So for me, the sweet spots are the 996/997.1 with the metzger engines.... I would probably go for the latest model 997.1 metzger.... most sports car like of the good engines.

Peace

Bruce--In what ways is the 997.2 chassis dumbed down?

The only way it's dumbed down is via the updated PASM since that's the only technical difference between the 997.1 and 997.2.

That is what I thought until I replaced my shocks and found the control arm configuration was different. The 997.1 instructions would not work... different bolt sizes and location of control arms among others. Porsche changed the suspension.
