Had one in my SLK55 AMG Black.....lasted 6 years while I had the car. Sold the car to a friend and it's still running strong 2 years later. I went through 2 Mercedes batteries in 2 years then switched.

I used one in my 930 for 4 years and worked like a champ plus weighed 1/5 of my wet battery.
Installed it to reduce acid venting to metal as your always fighting metal erosion in older Porsches.

Make sure you place it on a rubber mounted base, my first one destroyed itself after 1 year from vibration.

This was just in Excellence last month (august issue?) in one of their tech responses. 80% of auto batteries sold in the US are made by two companies, Johnson Controls and some other one I forget. Every auto battery brand is a subsidiary of those two companies or white labeled, including Optima which are produced by Johnson Controls. They are supposed to be one of the best brands from what the article said. I'm sure someone here actually keeps these issues and can find it and post that snippet here.

The other manufacturer was Exide if I remember correctly.

I think we are talking about two different batteries here....Odyssey and Optima. They are not the same.

Odyssey makes a battery for my 06S and costs $248.
Optima does not list a battery at all.

I do believe the Odyssey is a better battery as I have owned both types but in different cars. The Optima is about 15% less in price however. The Odyssey battery never failed where my Optima did. Again, different cars and neither in a 911.

I would be interested in hearing other people's experience as my Sears battery just clicked the two year mark. Not showing any weakness but I do put it on a trickle charger every two weeks.

I use odyssey mini battery in my track car - keep it on a battery tender all the time when not in use - never had a problem with it in 2 years

Oh boy. Yup. I don't know how I read Optima. Sorry for confusing everyone.

Odyssey (as I understand) was started by people who left Optima. I looked at both and chose Optima because I could easily get custom mounting boards for my cars.

AGM batteries still sulphate but if kept on a correct maintainer they will not. Correct charging is key, as otherwise internal pressure rise may lead to outgassing.

The Optima 34R will fit (but you'll need to modify the hold down). Looks like the suggested Odyssey battery for the 997 is an odd size too - it's a Group 49 whereas the 997's take a Group 94. I've had great experience with the Bosch AGM H7 - perfect fit, good specs and warranty plus you can usually find a pretty good coupon if you order on the Pep Boys web site and pick up the battery at a store.

I went with a lightweight option odyssey battery a few months ago and so far it's been excellent. No hesitation on startup or other issues. It weighs 16 lbs less than the Porsche battery it replaced with the Rennline mount.
