Default Can CS2 be a daily driver in Chicago?

I am relocating to Chicago in about a month and will be living and working in the City. Any opinions or comments about whether my 2010 CS 2 is practical year round in the city? Thanks, John

Not year round. Too heavy of snow falls. The cinders and salt will beat the crap out of your paint and your hood will be sandblasted while following other vehicles.

consider picking up a winter 'beater', with a/t and AWD

Chicago can be remarkably hard on a car in winter, not to mention
the associated risks with other drivers

It's possible if you choose to do so. Get a set of proper winter tires and a set of WeatherTech floor mats. The car will do fine unless there's really deep snow on the roads. The question shouldn't be if you can do it, but rather if you should do it. As mentioned above, the road conditions, salt and grit will be very rough on your car.

Personally living in Ontario I decline to use my 911 in the Winter. Its not the snow just idiot drivers who have problems driving during Summer time yet alone Winter.

My 996 C4S was my daily driver (it was my only car at the time) for five years in the midwest. The car performed fine, but the front end did look like it was sandblasted. The windshield had to be replaced a couple of times too.

I don't drive the 997 in really nasty conditions, even though I put winter tires on it every year. I drive my GMC truck in nasty weather.

I live in Barrington and have daily driven a 911 year round here since 2008 when we moved here. First a turbo and now a C4S. I also track my car 5-10 days per season. I could never compete on condition with the garage queens but I get to experience the car's capabilities.

I get the itch to trade frequently so wear becomes the next guys problem. Check the trade-in values between great conditon and good condition on a 5 yr 50k mile 911. The spread is small.

Btw, I have never seen a 911 with more than 30k miles on it that didn't need hood and front fascia repaint to be perfect so I consider them wear items just like tires and brakes.

For me, it's more a question of my personal priorities as opposed to whether the car can do it.

Paint damage by grit and salt can be tolerated. Tires can be swapped. But you'll go nowhere in deep snow. I wouldn't even attempt a year round 911 here even on winter tires unless it was AWD. And AWD still can't magically get taller to go over deep snow.

I own a 2010 C2S in Chicago too, and given that I blew out two tires in my other cars in potholes, I decided to make my 911 my fair weather car. The streets here are tough on cars during the winter and early spring months. But I do admire those who jump in during all seasons. Just get reasonable sized winter tires and rims and budget for the periodic repaint (or opt for clear bra).

No way a 997 RWD for the year around in Chicago. I used to have C4S and Turbo (both AWD) in the past which cannot deal with the big snow storms in Chitown between Dec to March. Really, no way...My DD is a V60 Polestar with Conti DWS06.

Lots of you seem to be against this. I daily an e46 m3 with a mild drop. With winter tires it does better than my minivan with all seasons. I'm looking for a c2s and plan on daily driving it. I can't stand to leave the fun car in the garage.

I think the best idea is to leave it with me out in the burbs.....rolling hills, no city traffic, heated garage, and good gas....I will help you...

YES. Just get a winter tire wheel set, I recommend Michelin pilot alpins and you are set. Don't listen to anyone tell you U can't DD one of these cars in Chicago. You absolutely can. I daily drive my 987-2 S here just fine. Never been stuck. And I drive to work downtown. Now, there may be perhaps one day a season where we get 12 inches overnight and if the streets are not plowed the you are SOOL. but so will everyone else.

I would not hesitate about it. I've been doing this 6+yrs here and all has been great. These cars were designed to handle the winter.
