Leave the bulb in...as others have said it will turn off automatically after about 2 hours (hardly enough time to do any battery damage) or if you lock and arm the alarm, the light will go off after about 20 minutes.

From the owner's manual:

If the ignition key is removed, loads which are
switched on or are in standby mode (such as the
luggage compartment light, interior light and
radio) are automatically switched off after approx.
2 hours.

I've done the engine lid open for years on my 993 and do the same thing on the 997. Just flip the black plastic engine lid latch closed. I use a small plastic pry tool takes two seconds. After cool down or the next time walking by the car I release the lever inside the car and close the engine lid.

It's amusing how much thought we car nuts can give to such a silly issue.
Takes us away from life's more serious matters.
I had a 1969 E-Type and then a Porsche 1972 911T while in med school.
Left the lids open on those vehicles after a run as well.
I guess I have been crazy for decades.
Additionally do it with my Aston and R8.

I just added a small toggle to mine more because the bulb gets so hot when I'm working on the car. Five minute install.

Someone here actually measured the temperatures with lid closed vs open...there's a BIG difference! I always open mine after a drive now.

With the trunk lid open your engine only cools by radiant cooling. After you shut your engine off the temp rises, and that is why the fans kick on to stop the temp raising to a dangerous level. After the fans stop then the remaining heat can be removed by radiant cooling with the trunk lid open.

Excellent point. I'll leave the lid closed and let the fan do its job. This hot summer's got the fan working every time these days. I do worry whenever I hear it working, not that I doubt Porsche's engineers, but only out of affectionate concern for the lovely 3.8 DFI Flat 6. I wonder if my GTS runs significantly hotter than a c2s given the extra Powa ala x51 kit.

This talk has got me thinking. What if that fan fails to turn on for whatever reason? Would the car issue a fault on the dash screen?

Buy a cheap LED and put it in. Power savings, runs much cooler, and looks better (subjective). When I changed mine out for an LED I found that the plastic light housing had partially melted since the stock incandescent light got so hot.

I, too, put an LED in, but find that the heat sinks on those suckers get VERY hot- although I can't compare it to the incandescent. Given that the wattage rating is so low on LEDs, I'm surprised at the amount of heat dissipating from them.

A 12V LED bulb should not have a large heatsink and release a lot of heat. Which brand did you use?

Anybody knows if the engine lid and trunk 44mm lights are checked by the CAN-bus?

I used Ebay Chinese quality, baby! http://www.ebay.com/itm/181208787882?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
The kit actually works nicely, seems to be of decent quality, hasn't triggered any errors. I believe it was the 8 smd units that went into the frunk and engine compartment sockets- equal or better brightness than the stock bulbs. Since these are supposedly canbus, I'm guessing in order for that too work it has to generate enough resistance (heat) to trick the car into thinking it has working filament bulbs in there.

Mine don't get nearly as hot as the stock bulbs. I only got CANBUS lights for the license plate. My trunk lights are not CANBUS and I haven't gotten any errors.

Edit: I want to make clear that I have not replaced my side or front blinker bulbs with LEDs. Those would definitely need to have resistors or something.
