Engine bay light
 

I generally open the engine lid following a drive. Is there any way
to turn off the light in the engine compartment?

I've done some electrical rewiring for the third brake light in that area - for the "poor man's fix" - it wouldn't be too hard to "cut in" a switch.

Another idea - switch to LEDs - I suspect they'd use a lot less energy.

FWIW - I used to do this but was told by many that its best to keep the lid closed, the 997 fans are very efficient at cooling the engine bay.

Switch to a LED bulb....open the lid and lock the car, the bulb goes out in 20 min. Been doing this for 8+ years now.

Don't understand why to open the lid as the fan is taken care of any remanent heat. However, just open the lid if you wish, light will go off automatically after 20 minutes as SoCal 2S responded. LED is nice but the tiny original bulb will not drain your battery in 20 minutes.

Lock the car with the engine lid open clicking your FOB lock twice. You will hear buzz (indicating the lid is open). The cabin will be locked and the engine lid light will turn off after 20 min. Without locking it will take much longer to turn off.

Why are you opening the engine compartment after driving??!!!? I think that is the most important question... :confused:

I was told that the heat dissipates much more quickly.
Does the trunk light go on automatically with the engine compartment light?
How do you get to the bulb in the engine area?
Removal seems to be the best option.

Leaving the lid closed and letting fan do its job is the best option. Porsche does a heck of a good job designing these cars and the forced draft created by the installed system is designed to cool the engine compartment during post-run heat soak. If opening the engine compartment lid was necessary, the manual would say so.

No, they're on separate switched circuits.

I agree with everyone's statement about the fan, etc.

What turned me over was the first time I took my car in for service at the dealer. They took me back to the service bay area to show me how clean it was and to meet my mechanic that would be changing my oil. In the lot was a good 20-30 911's of various years all with their lids open. When I asked what was going on, he said they leave the lids open to dissipate the heat faster so that when they work on them they are not as hot.

So lid up at home ever since. Does no harm, perhaps does no good.

I can't figure out how to get the darn bulb out.
Do I need to unbolt the fan?

In 95% of cases my fan don't engage after a drive. Still is hot but below the threshold of the thermostat. Since there is a lot of plastic and rubber in the engine bay I also open the lid to let the heat out.

You do (three bolts) - to turn over the whole housing then remove the bulb.
