Default LSD Experience

My 2011 GTS with PDK has the P17 option (sport suspension and mechanical rear differential lock). I can really notice the rear diff lock under hard acceleration and when I take a corner aggressively. I really like the feel of it. My question is does the lsd wear out quickly? I think it uses two clutches in the diff to control the wheel spin. I was hoping to hear from some of you that track the car regarding the life of the lsd. I also have a 993 with lsd and the lsd has long since stopped working. I am told this is common on the 993 diff and I am wondering about folks experience with the "newer" diff.

LSD usually takes 4-6 hours to totally wear out. Trips may vary depending on body size and weight.

I'm also sporting a 2011 GTS with PDK and P17. I've understood that the LSD these cars come with is not robust, at all. I don't have verifiable data though, just posts I've read.

I have the LSD on my 2009 C2S. With 30K on it with 12 or so track days, the differential now is operating basically as an open diff. This is rather disappointing.

Has anyone on here had their OEM limited slip diff repaired? If so please share the cost and your experience with the repair.

One thing that kills Lim Slip Diffs is the gobs of traction from wide tires and a rear engine.

Because of all the rear-end grip, if the tires aren't slipping, the LSD is.

Add in plenty of power and something has to give.

Common on our cars also and on 997 GT cars as well. The lockup feature just doesn't hold up, especially if tracked at all. The 09 C2S I bought in 2012 came equipped with PDK, SPASM and factory LSD. It was the previous owner's DD. I think it had around 49k miles when I got it and the PPI showed the lockup aspect of the diff was long gone. Porsche doesn't sell or repair PDK diffs (open or locking) and there were no aftermarket solutions at that time either.

The OEM and aftermarket diffs for MT 997.2s are not compatible with PDK unfortunately. Plus the two OEM PDK diffs (open and locking) are different dimensionally and have different covers so when Guard Transmission and BGB Motorsport set out to develop a PDK LSD, they discovered they'd have to make two: one for the open diff PDKs and one for the LSD equipped PDKs.

They did and they have been available for a couple years now. OS Giken also released one. Their website says it is for the non - factory LSD (open) diff only.

I put the Guard PDK diff in my C2S last summer and it made a huge difference - not just when accelerating out of tight corners but also under hard braking. The 2012 GTS I bought recently must be the only one in the US without the factory locking diff option so I couldn't reuse the one in my 09. I found an open diff flavor Guard LSD on RL and it has been installed in the GTS which will be at Sebring this weekend for our first event together. Can't wait!

Hope this helps.

I have has OS Giken units in street and race cars and I have been happy with them. I would look into going that route.

So I believe the 997.2 has an "electronic" diff, no? In other words, the car uses brake to emulate an LSD? Is that true? If so, how does that interact with an aftermarket diff? Is there any benefit? I am probably showing my ignorance here.
