Can you explain the differences in work in the retrofit vs. the core exchange?

Default Question

I need a solution to the sloppy shifter in my 997.

Do the OEM Short Shift kit address the same issue as this product?

Installing the retrofit kit adds a few more steps to the process, and you'll need a few extra tools to complete the job. (If you've ever installed an aftermarket short shifter into a Porsche, then it's a similar process.) It will take about an extra half hour to install vs. the core exchange, which is a drop-in solution. You can look through the Installation Instructions located at the bottom of the product page for the full details, but here is a simplified breakdown of the extra steps:

1. cut out the OEM plastic bushings
2. remove the OEM shifter yoke
3. install the upgraded shifter yoke
4. install the upgraded shifter bushings (90deg retaining ring pliers required for this)

The SHIFT-RIGHT Solution accomplishes a different goal than the OEM short shift kit. It replaces the major pivot points of the shifter unit with aluminum components and ball bearings to remove any flex and play from those points and has no impact on the shift lever throw. The OEM short shifter, on the other hand, simply changes the fulcrum point on the shift lever for a shorter throw, and it uses all the same plastic components in the pivot points as the standard shifter.

The SHIFT-RIGHT is compatible with the OEM short shift kit, and that's actually the exact setup you see in the promotional shot in the original post above. That's my shifter

Any thoughts on potential impact to a CPO warranty if one were to install this?

Any chance that you have a core exchange short shift version available for sale? (assuming you would accept my non-ssk unit as the exchange)

I believe you'll only be denied CPO warranty if the part in question caused by or was part of the cause of the failure for which you are seeking a warranty claim.

I wouldn't worry about it!

I do have 1 spare OEM 997 SSK lying around. I'll send you a PM with details.

Here are some before and after comparisons of the shifter mechanism, pre and post SHIFT-RIGHT Solution installation!

(Note that the BEFORE video is the stock shifter out of a 2001 986 Boxster S, and the AFTER videos are of a SHIFT-RIGHT retrofit kit upgraded factory 987/997 short shift kit. It's still an apples-to-apples comparison, since both units utilize the same bushings from the factory.)

BEFORE...
Excessive shifter play and slop, particularly in the fore/aft bushings.

AFTER...
Zero flex and zero play in the mechanism yields smooth, solid, predictable, and consistent shifter action.

I do have one 997 SSK that I could offer up for a Core Exchange. I'll send you a PM.

Btw, we now have enough buyers participating for the group rate to go in effect. Please reach out if you'd like to take advantage of the discount!
