911 has been ''in trouble'' since its second year. It's biggest threat has always been from Porsche's practical sports car side... Porsche's GT side... Porsche's luxury and SUV side...

Everything else can be better on paper, and if something else is better on paper, it drives the Germans insane that the rest of the world doesn't care.

If you can get a Cayman GT4 for $85,000, is the 911 in trouble?
No. GT4 is an amazing Cayman. No Cayman is a 911. To me, and to many, Porsche still = 911. I'd love a GT4 as a third fun car, though. Some variant of 911 will always be my main sports car.

It's a "starter" Porsche - they have to price it right to entice buyers into the fold.

This. The 911 goes the way of the dodo, our cars become more collectible? Fortunately, I'm well on my way to making mine worthless to anyone but me between the high mileage and the turkey killing...T

The 911 and it's variants is Porsche and always will be.
First a thumbs up on the yellow belts and now a on this statement. Porsche is on top of its Brand and the market segmentation of its models. Sure, the GT4 is a fantastic car but it is marketed to a totally different buyer than the majority of the 911s buyers. Right now I'd give PAG/VWAG the benefit of the doubt on how they identify who their buyers are and which models they will purchase. IF the king is dead, long live the King!

We often take day trips this time of year. Top down with the daughters

Plus iconic shape.

Any GT3 owners willing to trade for a GT4?

Any 911 GTS owners willing to trade for a Cayman GTS?

Any Carrera S owners willing to trade for a Cayman S?

I would take minty 997/2 TT over a GT4 for about the same money.

Had 2 new Caymans (S), nice cars, not a 911...

An acquaintance was boo-hooing he sold his TT for a new GT4, seems 385 h.p. was not the 500+ h.p. he had gotten used to.

In 4 months, he has had it on a track a grand total of 1 time.

Cayman - younger single guy planning to be racing driver.
911 - "mature" married guy with young kids that can still fit in back.
Macan/Cayenne - kids now too big to fit in back.
911 again - kids grown up and now on second/trophy wife or single for life.

Porsche, aside from the GT3/GT3RS and other type of specialty cars, has been slowly but surely moving the 911 from a sports car into a GT car.

It seems Porsche wants the Cayman to occupy the sports car place that the 911 used to, and the 911 will be their Grand Tourer.

Makes sense, as the 911 has become bigger and softer, just like the demographic who buys then.

Yup, back seats. I had a Merc SL once as a weekend toy but so many times something came up unexpectedly where I needed to give a 3rd person a ride. Sure it's uncomfortable in the back of a 911 for anyone over 5ft tall and 100 lbs, but in a pinch and for a short distance, even for an average-sized man it's at least possible. Lack of back seats are why I never considered a Vette or any other 2-seater. And now I have no place to keep more than our 2 cars, so as a DD I absolutely have to have some kind of a back seat.
