997.2 Key Repair

Buy cheapo key replacement on ebay. Remove button from cheapo key blank, and insert into your original key. Done.

They are even cheaper (~$12-15) if you get one from a China vendor, but delivery will take a couple of weeks.

Agree! Cheap on eBay etc.
There is a recent thread by Jennifer911 or whatever her alias was. She actually repaired it by drilling small holes and inserting aluminium pins in the small holes. Very delicate work and requires more fiddling than most people will have patience to but I think her end result was probably more durable than the original key fob. Looked good!
Edit: the thread starts with "help my boyfriend" and is by jennifer911. You can find it by search function
The whole thread derailed after a few pages so there is no need to read the last comments after the final detailed pictures. Really. Unless you are interested in

I used a drop of super glue to attach the nib on the small piece into its hole in the body. I need to squeeze a bit harder but it works and I consider the extra pressure as a positive.

I did the cheapo China fix..... twice!! I broke the replacements!!!
Given that I am a DIY nerd, I nipped a tiny edge from a utility knife blade, heated it, and pushed it into the plastic to make a new nub. Worked. I wear a set of these things below to do this work. What I really like is that anyone who sees me use these glasses leave me alone for weeks after.
Peace

can we not just buy the ebay key and just swap out the top button piece ONLY?
edit - lol just realize this is an old thread and my question has been answered (pretty much by myself a year back)

Just as a disclaimer: I've gone through two of these buttons over the past year.
If you look at the more distal part of the lock/unlock button (towards keyblade), there is a small tab that acts like a pivot/hinge. Do not push on this part of the button to lock/unlock the car, otherwise that little part could snap or weaken. Push on the more proximal part of the button closer to the frunk release.
