Because he was sold part no 106-08.2 that is for the small bearing used for model years '00-'05. OP has yet to say what labor he was charged. Post #20 also adds to the mystery.

Would be interesting to also know where the $800 bearing is now. Probably went straight to ebay or something.

What's more likely to have occurred?

1. Your 2006 Carrera had a MY2006 engine installed at the factory. Thousands of MY2006 cars were built before and after yours with the larger single row bearing. Your car, and yours alone received the eariler bearing, yet somehow was secured by the larger 22mm hex nut. Making your car completely unique of all the thousands of 997.1's.

2. An independent mechanic lied to you.

Knowing the Labor charge is important.

In the thread on the 996 forum the OP said there was no labor charge for the IMS bearing replacement as the RMS was being replaced. Only charge was $800 for the part.

Dude, your mechanic LIED! How in the world do you trust him more than actual part# of the car, and what Porsche has put out of their factories. If you're asking for explanations, he's the one who should explain it, not us!

Unless they put an 05 engine in your car AND that picture is not your engine picture, there's no way to replace those bearings, period!

None of this adds up. The engine pictured in the first post is definitely an M97 IMSB thats not retrofittable in the M96 manner.

The Oracle of Cleveland has spoken. Sorry buddy, I was pulling for you, but if Jake says it can't be, then it can't be.

Correct. We were doing the rear main seal already - paid labor for that - so only paid for the IMS part.

Guys I am still working on this. Supposed to talk to the mechanic tonight.

Will get as much info as possible and report back.

I love my car and want nothing more than to share a success story of fool-proofing my IMS - which is what I thought I was doing in the first place.

OK so it would appear that everyone here was on the right track. I have discussed with the mechanic and we are working it out. My sincere thanks to everyone for the feedback. I'm just glad to know what's going on with my car now.

Tech will blame it on someone else at his shop. Then likely claim he fired the guy blah blah blah. Bottom line is your tech tried to steal from you. You sound like a pretty passive guy. But I would never let some ******* get away with this. Be nice, get your refund then blow him the **** up on any porsche forum possible. Tell your friend that referred him as well and never ever go there again and urge your buddy the same. This guy went into your wallet and stole 800$ plain and simple.
