Default What is this phone mount thing

Hello- new 997.2 owner here as of last night. I'm loving the car but have a question what this phone mount thing is. Took part of it off thinking I could remove it but it's not so pretty underneath so replaced it. Says made in Germany underneath- anyone ever seen this? Just curious to what my options are other for using it with an iPhone.

Hmm, never seen that before. Must be some aftermarket piece. You might need to get a new side panel.

Nice full leather.

Does anyone know if I can purchase stitched leather panels that cover the pcm?

I'm sorry, I have no idea about the phone mount.

It is an attachment for a phone set still offered as an option in the 997.2 gen.

You can use it. Put flat magnets in it. Get metal plates for your phone case.

Instant, awesome phone mount. You can buy these things on Amazon, and the mount you show is also available for a number of cars.

Here are some phone mounting kits with metal plates and magnets:

This is the correct answer. You probably don't want to remove it as it appears to be screwed through the side panel. No way of fixing that other than replacing the panel.

Magnetic phone mounts are awesome and super convenient.

If you don't like it hanging out into the passenger's footwell, try to find a replacement side panel on ebay. I'm 99% sure the 997.1 as well as Caymans all used the same panels. It's just a matter of finding one in leather. If you do this, there are an infinite number of phone mounting options out there.

Thanks guys ya I may as well use it- I'll put some strong magnets inside that and put a thin metal plate in my phone case. And get an auxiliary Bluetooth adapter. Should work out well for Pandora especially since I'm still on an unlimited data plan.

The Bluetooth on the .2 cars is not A2DP. It will only link to your phone calls. To listen to Pandora I found I needed to connect through the AUX connector on the center glove box. FWIW, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Note 5.

Ya I bought a Bluetooth to auxiliary adapter at Best Buy to leave in the center console. Works well and sounds clear just not very loud. Oh well, the flat 6 always sounds good.

Speaking of Bluetooth- the PCM won't recognize my iPhone 6 Plus for calls. Just kept searching... And phone Bluetooth works as I pair it with stuff all the time.

You can get aftermarket ones as well. I got one for my MB CLS a few years back, and the material is almost identical.

It's a cheap option if you want something that matches the interior.

As ADias first said, it is the factory phone mount. I stumbled into a photo of it just now and remembered your post. Just FYI, here is what it normally looks like with the phone:
