Question Air filter, which is best: Stock, K&N, BMC?

Hello all,

I'm going to be changing my air filter, and am debating on stock vs K&N vs BMC.

I know that cone style filters clog up the mas air sensor (from experience with my previous 996), but do drop in filters also cause this problem because they are also oiled?

Should I just stick with factory?

also, my car has about 36,000 miles but being that it is a 2006, should I change the spark plugs due to time or just wait till they have more mileage on them?

Thanks

I will give you one person's opinion--unless you can come up with a good reason stay with the stock filter and the plugs

Factory filter flows great...and no worries with possible oil contamination of MAF.

Best for….? OEM paper filters are best for filtration. Filters that improve performance can only do so by improving air flow. There's only one way of improving air flow without sacrificing filtration, and that's by increasing surface area. So unless the performance air filter is a lot bigger it can't be filtering as good as OEM. QED. Make sense?

Will you also remove the air box if you go for aftermarket filters? If so, you will get problem with hot air entering the engine and you will actually loose power.

The way to avoid it is in that case to go for the after market solutions where you add the "engine wall" to keep the heat away from the air filters.

I just stick with the OE filters. Not worth the risk for the minor, if any gain.

Regarding spark plugs. The service schedule recommends six years or 60k I believe? I changed mine when the book said to.

Spark plugs are cheap. I would have a close look at the coils as well. If they are the original ones they might start to crack sooner then later. Coils and plugs are cheap and easily done by yourself.

For 997.2 schedule is at 40K miles. The creak as they are removed. I would not want to go further on the replacement. I'll admit to being nervous when it comes to aluminum, but still ...

Ive always put k&n or bmc in every car I have ever owned. If its available I use bmc because they are oiled slightly less plus after several years they look less deteriorated - to some extent

I use BMC. Fantastic Italian quality. I just pull out every year, clean, and apply BMC's supplied red stuff as directed. Plugging MAF is a myth. I did some experiments with my Fluke # 922 air flow meter and it indicated about 15-17% more FLOW with BMC against new OEM papar filter maid by Mahle.
Good filter is a clean filter.

If the filter is not the restriction, it doesn't matter if another filter flows more or not. You have to start with the restriction--whatever that is (usually the cat).

I get "oem" filter and spark plugs from Pelican (or your preferred source of OEM).... cheaper.

I know for a fact that the plugs are the exact same as Porsche labeled. While I am not sure about the paper filters being exact, I feel confident about my purchase.

Peace
