997 Gauge Cluster Change & Mileage
I'm thinkng about changing my white faced S gauge cluster with a black faced once since the white doesn't go with anything else in the car. Is the vehicle mileage stored within the cluster or stored in the DME and reported through the cluster, as I don't want to do anything that would change the accuracy of the vehicle mileage since it's a pretty low-mileage car at 45k over 10 years.
Thanks.
Thanks.

The mileage is in the DME, not the cluster. I had to swap mine shortly after buying it because the small lcd display was working intermittently...it was a straight swap and the mileage remained the same. Having said that, how about just changing the dial faces? It should be less expensive.

I think the white works well and would leave it as is.

Sounds like that car needs more seat time!

Probably so, but it's so great I'm trying to balance seat time with it lasting for 30 years, plus I only have 1 seat and 3 of them to share the love with, so it and the 928 get about 3,500-4,000 per year; the 914 a good bit less, probably 1,000-1,500 and they all go out in only good weather with the Infiniti and Pick-up doing most of the trips and bad weather duty.

10k miles a year is a good round number to me ...
I also second the contrasting white gauges. I have a base C2, so I have black faces on my cluster, and I think it looks too dark.
If I could get Arctic Silver gauge faces, that would be ideal.

I really like the silver gauges I had in my 2004 996.2 and the silver gauges that are on my current 2010 997.2. You get three different gauge colors depending on the time of day:
- Daytime: Silver gauges
- Dusk/Dawn: Gray gauges
- Night time: Black gauges

I thought I read somewhere that a sub 100 mile replacement custer will refresh from the DME, but any cluster with more than 100 miles will not. This is a security feature to prevent mileage tampering. The replacement cluster will keep its miles from the donor car. But there are overseas sites that adjust milege for salvage cars and rebuilt engines by shipping them your cluster. They are useful for resetting a used cluster to match your original one. Way cheaper than buying a new one.

Pete, FWIW I went with changing the face gauges... http://www.fvd.us/us/en/Porsche-0/92...t__Manual.html
Still need to find the time to install them... maybe over the xmas holiday.

Do you have a 997.2? Was the replacement cluster new? My experience with a used 997.1 is different. The mileage changed when the cluster was swapped.
