Default CPO question

I am looking at a privately owned 997 that has 1 year of factory CPO left. It has an aftermarket suspension and short shift kit installed. Will either of these void the CPO warranty?

Depends on what goes wrong while still under warranty and how tolerant your dealer is of modifications. Not an easy question to answer. I personally wouldn't worry about it.

In private sales the CPO is transferrable. It is only invalidated for dealer sales.

Warranty coverage is typically only denied if the failure could be related to the modification in question. If the problem is unrelated, let's say in your case an engine problem, then the CPO should cover it since the engine itself should be affected by the short shifter or the suspension. Disclaimer: Note that this is based on my experience and what I've head others say and is not to be construed as legal advice!

Here is a link to a more authoritative source: http://lehtoslaw.com/will-modificati...-car-warranty/. There are others on the web as well, for example: http://www.smart-service.com/blog/20...arranty-rights

Based on testimony I've seen from others, the only time this can be an issue is if the warranty claim is associated with the part of the car that's been altered. In other words, if your engine craps, denying coverage because you have an after market suspension won't fly. My current GTS was CPO'd with after market lowering springs installed.

Thanks everyone for the info. Does anyone know if the CPO automatically transfers when I buy the car or do I need to contact PCNA?

Mine transferred without contacting PCNA. I went to my local Porsche dealer and they confirmed the CPO in their system and I was good to go.

I would suggest calling Porsche North America at 1-800-PORSCHE (1-800-767-7243) with that question. Every doc I see that mentions transfer simply states it is transferrable but does not say how. The wording seems to imply that the transfer is not automatic though; "... can be transferred..."

Here the last lines of the PDF brochure here: http://files1.porsche.com/filestore....9-0019999cd470
Can I transfer the warranty?
Should you wish to sell your
Porsche, you will also benefit
from the Porsche Pre-Owned
Limited Warranty. The
remaining warranty can be
transferred to the new owner.

I would also call your dealer you take the car to before you buy it and make sure they are aware of everything, then they cant complain later. Hopefully you know that any car you buy should be inspected before you buy it.

There should be a postcard in the back of the maintenance or warranty manual that you use to notify PCNA of change of ownership.

Yes, mine automatically transferred, CPO is tracked via the VIN. Everyone said that non Porsche dealer sales will void CPO, I brought mine at Jake's Motorcars and still had the CPO warranty. When I got my PPI at Pioneer Porsche (now Porsche of San Diego) they told me it has CPO warranty and told me there was RMS seepage that would be covered under CPO if I decide to buy it.

Great info guys I appreciate it. Ynot I find it very interesting that your car was purchased at a non Porsche dealer and the CPO still transferred. I have never heard anyone say this before. I am expecting a call back from a private dealer and will see what he says about it. Thx

Yep, I read this all the time. But that wasn't the case with me. I had two years of CPO when I brought mine. Jake's Motorcars in San Diego sells more Aston and Bentley's than they sell Porsches. They are far from a Porsche dealership.
