hi all. rather than posting a new thread, i figure i’d leverage this captive audience and ask my targa specific question here…
can everyone share the common culprits or sources for rattles? are there other non targa specific locations to look at?
My rattles and creaks are generally from:
1 - Primarily the front when closed. The wind deflector can get jiggled and rubs against the bottom supports inside above it when resting. I put felt tape over those and it’s worked so far.
2 - Also up front, the glass piece has trim that rubs against the underside of the little “cave” it sits in when closed. I put felt tape over this area, and generally it works but not always, so more investigation is needed.
3 - Rear when open. When fully open, on body flex I get some sounds but not otherwise. Typically some sailkote fixes this.
I have a 996 targa, same roof system as 997. I installed a 997 sunscreen in fact. I fix the roof squeaks with a somewhat pricey but very effective lubricant, Krytox 205, that I massage into all of the rubber bits. A little bit goes a long way, and it lasts a long time. I learned about from the BMW E93 folks.
Sold my beloved 997.2 Targa 4S this week. In two years I barely put 1300 miles on it (it only has 36,321 total miles on it). Hard to justify keeping such a beautiful car so stagnant when it demands to be driven. Hopefully it goes to someone who’ll drive the hell out of it. Put it on a transport today and said goodbye.
Thankfully I still have my 993 to keep me company in my old age.
