Default Possibly trading in my 2011 C4S for a 2015 GTS - thoughts ?

Hi;

Dealer I trust has a 2015 GTS with < 2000 miles on it for sale. Checked it out today and I really like it. Thinking of trading my 2011 C4S with < 18000 miles in for it. Wondering:

1) Am I nuts ? Mine has been taken excellent care of; the GTS looks like it's been treated similarly (also, it's practically new). I don't *need* a new car (in fact, we just bought a new DD). I drive the 911 whenever I can, but that's not that much. I wasn't in the market for a new car, but someone asked me if I'd be interested in trading mine in, and that got me to thinking.

2) How do I find a fair value on my 2011 ? Dealer is using Edmund's pricing, but there's some weirdness in the Edmund's engine - when I choose a 2011 it does not allow me to choose options to price it, so it shows the base price.

I'd be interested to hear any thoughts. Thanks everyone !

My next 911 will be a 991 but only with the desired options. My '11 C4S came with $17k worth of options such as SPASM, Full Leather, Sport Crono, Sport Shifter, Carbon Package just to name a few.

I can get a 991 C4S for almost the same amount I paid for my 997, but no where near the options mine came with. I'm assuming the prices will drop when enough 991.2's are on the street and I can get one with the right options at the right price.

Well, as many prior generation owners say of the next generation, too big, too soft. I'll not be interested in the 991 family for many years. (Which was my comment when comparing my ex-6GT3 to 997s. )

Not having priced or being familiar with the value proposition the 991GTS offers compared to the 997GTS package, I cannot address this directly, but if the 991 appeals to you, and it offers a similar value, why not?

When I was shopping for my 2012 GTS, I surveyed the Porsche 911 locator, Auto Trader, Panorama, and Edmunds for data points. My negotiations started from there. Bought mine (CPO from a dealer) for $10k below asking, and I may have overpaid by $2-3k. I would guess they gave the guy who traded it in $15k less than asking, but just a guess.

1) yes you are nuts - but aren't we all.
Both are fantastic vehicles.
Dealer you trust? Don't listen to them. They are in the business of selling and making a profit off of you. They are not your friend. They are a business. A business of taking money out of your pocket. they are going to make money off or selling you the new car, and will make money on selling your trade.
Don't get emotional on this purchase. Shop your 2011. Have a firm value in mind. Shop another 2015 GTS too. Have a difference number in your head. If that does not jive, walk. Suffer in your super fantastic C4S.

I love the way the 991 GTS looks however it is not that big of a leap in technology to warrant the new car payment.
I personally will keep my eye on the 991.2 generation and see what happens there.

The 991 GT3 is the way to go IMHO but I simply can't afford it.

I love my 911... but it seems like this may be a good opportunity, at the right time. I didn't think I'd be crazy about the ride from all I've read - I thought it would be too soft and too detached from the 911 feel I was used to. I was wrong. The 991.2's are going to be all turbo, so this is the "last chance" to get a normally aspirated 911... but there have been "last chances" for one thing or another going back a bit so I'm not sure how much that matters. I like the GT3 more... but I like taking the kids around and I like staying married.

Just depends which way you want to go.

I'm a technology geek.. I want to feel what a 4s or GTS 991.2 with rear steering could be like with all that low down torque and PDK II transmission on the track.
They even gave it active aero...

banks and car dealers use nada book values, the dealer will allow you less than the lowest dirty trade in value and sell for more than the highest retail

I wouldn't do it.

Not sure for a weekend / second car what the benefits are going to be.

For that use, I would much rather go GT3 (997 or 991) to make it more of an occasion.

But I don't see any appeal whatsoever in the 991 carrera series vs. the 997.2. Personal preference, clearly.

Isn't the value of a 2015 GTS the same as a 991 GT3? I would get the GT3 even it's a bit more. Unlike most people on the 997 section of the forum. I am a fan of the 991 styling. It feels big, it feels bloated, obviously, most of them haven't driven one on the track. It feels just right to me. The 991S is faster than a 997 GT3, says a lot about the engineering and the chassis of the 991.

Looks like a used 2015 GT3 is roughly 50K more than a similarly used 2015 GTS. I like the GT3 a lot, but I don't get as much track time as I'd like and I have 2 kids that like riding in the back, so I'm holding off on the GT3 for now. Also, I'd like to pace my upgrades - I'll enjoy the GTS for a while, and will still have room to grow if I have the time and the money.

Thanks for the advice everyone - please keep it coming !

The 2012 GTS is my first Porsche and it's a keeper. I have no desire to even look at a 991 GTS because I'm really happy with what I have. If you had purchased the 997.2 GTS instead of your 997.2 4S, you probably wouldn't consider trading now either. You may feel the same way about the 991 GTS?

I think there's diminishing returns when you jump to a 991, so I think the sweet spot is a 997.2 GTS.
