Get your trans fixed and drive it.
What he said!

When you're in there, do clutch, and RMS (easy to do when tranny is out), then drive the heck out of it and enjoy. IMS on your car doesn't need upgrading!

06-08 failures on the street are pretty much non- existent. The only units we have seen fail have been on the track. I've only seen two street applications where an 06-08 lost the IMSB.

Jake, thank you for posting. I'm sure lots of 997.1 owners, including me are relieved to hear a reassuring advice.

Not so. As I said they are now able to remove 06+ bearings with a little machining. Plus check Raby's response later in thread on bearing failures.

We have seen so few 06+ failures that they are almost non existent on the street. The track is where the problems show up.

No use in doing anything to an 06* IMSB except frequent oil changes. This is based from direct experience, and today's current statistics from my failure logbook.

Moderators - can we make this post a sticky so we can refer people back to this when people worry about large-bearing failures???

There is no need, everyone that frequent these forums already knows this. Literally hundreds of IMS threads out there.

Jake, Is the track failure due to overrevs or something else?

Bearing surface speed... When the bearing has the diameter increased so much, everything travels faster. The fix worked great for the street, horrible for the track.

The M96 diameter bearing is backwards from this, it loves the track and hates the street, because it's surface speed is too slow.

Flat6 and LN no longer recommend removing the rear IMSB seal for the newer, larger bearing?

Sure, do that if you are swapping the clutch and etc anyway... No reason to go out of your way to do this as a preventative.

If the OP's mechanic is equipped to do it, and with the transmission already out, I think the IMSB seal should go.

If you do swap the clutch it would be a great time for a low-weight flywheel.

^ Mr. Raby has some experience to conclude that is a bad idea ...
