Default Help with wheels.

Hello All:

I’m not a knowledgeable guy when it comes to cars I just have the will to learn more as I have just bought my first 2006 911 4S Cabriolet.
I want to change the alloys on my car, (I have the old Lobsters on it) and I don’t want to go for another 19 inch alloy, I want to put 20 inch on it.
I assume this means new tires, smaller in size to allow for the increase of the wheel size.
I want to buy Porsche OEM used and that brings new challenges because these usually sell with tires and I don’t know if the package will fit.
Then there is the issue about narrow body and broader body. I assume that my 4S 2006 is a broader body 911.
Then there is the issue of spacers, will I need them wont I need them?
Please point me in the right direction.
Regards,

I hate to be "that guy", but there's a ton of info on basic wheel fitment in this forum. Do a search.

But to throw you a bone, yes, you need to buy new tires for upsized wheels.

Yes, your C4S is a "widebody".

You won't need spacers if you buy widebody fitment OEM wheels.

I appologize if this is a topic that has been “beaten to death” but when I do a search for “wheel fitment” I get responses such as:

"YACHTLIGHTS SPECIAL - 991 Turbo S on HRE P106 - TAG Motorsports"

I don’t mean to lazy here I just need to be pointed in the right direction.

Thanks

There wasn't an OEM option in 20" for the 997, so you'll be purchasing a 991 wheel. You'll need to look at the offset of the wheels that you are purchasing and the overall diameter of the wheel/tire combination. Try to get as close to stock 997 values as possible to avoid rubbing. You won't find an "official" size recommendation, but perhaps you can find somebody who has installed 20" wheels without issues to give you some advice. Keep in mind that a 20" wheel will sacrifice a bit of ride quality vs. a 19" wheel.

I would not do 20's on a car unless you have really smooth roads, and no potholes or rough pavement. Plus with 20's the ride is going to be jarring over any bumps. Stick with 19's and you have lots of OEM to choose from. Go to suncoastparts to wheel shop, just to get an idea.

I actually think 18" is the right size for the car.

19s are just a little too big.

Don't listen to these people, 20"s doesn't give you a rough ride, it depends on your tires, my 19"s with nitto's feels a lot more jarring than 20"s with PS2's. 19"s are ideal, it's cheaper and you have a wider selection on wheels. 20"s are very limited, especially when you go 325mm in the rear, you really have only two choices. Conti's or Michellins. The 997 is bigger than the 981 Boxster and the Boxster comes with 20"s so it doesn't look huge on the 997. I have no rubbing and no rough ride issues with my 20"s. It's not necessary heavier either, my 20"s are lighter than the 19"s OEMs that comes with it. Good luck in finding your perfect wheels. I'm happy with mine.

Great picture. 19 inch are correct for that car. We have the lobsters on our C4 Cab, and they are great (IMO) with red calipers and seal gray. Ride is less tiring overall than a towncar ! If he goes 20 inch, the tire diameters will have to go up some I think, as there is only about 2 inches of sidewall with the 19s. Does that effect the speedometer calibration? I don't think Porsche recalibrates car speed to agree with NAVI (GPS) but maybe all the S cars have NAVI as standard and do perform speed cals. I do know that the NAVI uses wheel tach data in tunnels and treed areas to update location and instantaneous speed on the map.

This is your answer hear from Carmichael....I'd like to add...20" wheels on a 997 based car will degrade handling performance and ride quality. But if you like that DuB 20" look then you know what to do.

I have the 5 spoke wheel, like the car in the picture but mine are 18's. Overall wheel size is the same as if I have 19's, but I have more rubber. The only thing that I want different is the wheels to be black.

The right 20s can look amazing on the 997. Ill probably go with 19s, but as ynot pointed out, with the right tires 20s are fine for ride quality.

If you get the right ones, they might even be lighter AND stronger than peoples 18s. Ask Dennis

Here is one set that I think looked very good
