Default Advice needed for 997.1

Hey guys! I recently just bought my CPO 07 997.1 C2 with 21k miles. The car is a dream and I love every minute of it. In researching it I thought I was in the clear from avoiding the earlier year 997's IMS issues but I guess I have seen a couple of posts with this issue. The dealership said I still had a smaller percentage of having an issue because its a larger bearing but if I wanted to sleep better at night he recommended going with the aftermarket IMS fix before the warranty runs out. I am worried it might to lead to other unforeseen issues. The car runs great and not really sure if I should pull the plug! Any of your Porsche wisdom would settle my brain! Thanks for your help!

I recently purchased an 2008 targa 4 s and had the same question after visiting PCA and porsche web forums. I called Bert smith and reeves porsche authorized dealerships in Tampa
Bert smith gave me a 2k cost to change out the bearing to LN (but suggested we discuss before making this decision) Reeves service manager told me that in his 25 years experience he never saw a 06 and newer IMS bearing fail issue and suggested my engine was "an anvil" and would not suggest changing the single row IMS bearing
He further stated that the issue was real in 99 to 05 engines with double row IMS bearings
Hop this helps

Neither of you spoke to people that have a clue. You have to split the engine block to replace the bearing in '06 and newer and if they said they'd do that for $2K I wouldn't want them doing that.

Drive it and forget about the IMS. If it bothers you stop reading these forums because they are full of garbage like this...I had a 996 and stopped reading the forums for that very reason. I sold it with 87,000 miles and zero issues.

^^^ good response as always Defector.

" Reeves service manager told me that in his 25 years experience he never saw a 06 and newer IMS bearing fail"

Hmmm. The math just don't work out there.

Defector is right. There is nothing practical U can do to "help" re ims re both cars mentioned above. I don't think anyone with a perfectly running engine has split the engine case apart to change the bearing.

Thanks for the input. I was worried because the car is so low mileage and wasn't a daily so I have no idea how it would affect the engine/bearing over time. I have read 997's that were used as daily's kept the oil flowing consistently through the engine at the right temperatures so this kept the issue from ever happening. So I guess no one out there does this preventative IMS fix on 07's? I just dropped 49K on my dream 911 and really pray I don't have IMS issues! IM FRIGGIN PARANOID! So SORRY I am a newb, be gentle.

Yah this ims issue is overdone. I called eu autowerks in Canada.. and the guy basically told me he would love my business but don't lose any sleep over it.

Their shop only seen three engine failure from Porsche and would not suggest doing just for fear.

He also says if he has to replace it, he will do it with another Porsche ims as maintenance rather than LN

-keep the revs between above 2500 when ever possible.
-when the engine oil isnt warmed up (under 200) keep the revs between 2500-3500
-once the engine oil is above 200 drive it the way it was meant to be driven... i red line mine at least once a week

i change the oil every 4k miles but that can be debated... also pick up the magnetic drain plug from suncoast (while ordering a few oil filters while you are at it).

enjoy - u dont need to worry about ims... now where are the photos?!

I think the whole thing is overblown. I drove my 2002 C4S for over 120,000 miles before I decided to change my IMSB as a preventative measure while my clutch was being replaced. The original IMSB showed no signs of impending failure, even though it was supposedly the worst design of any of them. I know that there have been failures and that it's not impossible, but I do believe that the issue gets more attention than it should because of web forums.

Great looking car!
All it needs now is H&R springs, 15 mm spacers front and back, and clear side markers. Fister exhaust optional ;-)
Congrats!

Same worry - same kind of fears. Mine had 17K on it when I bought it. After talking to Porsche of Orlando and 3 local indy's - I just don't worry about it any more.

I'm more worried about the shift cables, the AOS, and the alternator cable now.
