Less likely, but check your coolant cap. Tight? Does it end in part number "04"??
Ends in part number .03

Make sure to replace with a new blue cap with the updated (04) part number.

If you indy did this somewhere along the line, you may want to consider a new indy who knows Porsches.
I am totally NOT being sarcastic, simply curious (it's often hard to tell when one is writing). If you know and/or care to respond, how is Porsche anti-freeze chemically different? Thanks!

The traditional green coolant was designed for cast iron blocks. Most modern engines are entirely of aluminium construction, including the water pump impellors.
The color indicates the chemical content which are different in each type. So mixing colors is a no no, as well as using the wrong type.

Mixing coolant types can be very detrimental depending on the mix... some mixes will result in a gummed up solution. If you don't go with Porsche coolant then pink VW coolant will also work but do the research to secure the right alternative. In this case completely flush the system just to be on the safe side since you're not sure what type of coolant was used... should be ~8+ gallons in total. Check the old WP's polymer impellers... if they've broken off then consider a complete coolant system service - fish out all impeller bits which may require removal/inspection of all coolant hoses. GL.

I think porsche switched to orange coolant sometime early in the 997 production. It might be possible yours in green from the factory. Is it an 05?

Oops- just saw it was an 05 in the posts.

Yes and looks like my coolant resorvoir is a 996. part - I've got a great indy scheduled to run a full system flush, new waterpump and coolant resorvoir.

Also correction to my title - the waterpump failed right as I pulled into my garage - the "smoke" was likely heavy steam from the coolant leaking.

Next time someone ask "how long does a water pump last on a 997.1" we can tell them about 71,001 miles and not a driveway more.

Haha - well in that case I better get more specific - 70,649 miles....full life span.

My wife's did the same thing. Floor was dry when she left to take the kids to school, and a puddle was there when we left for lunch. Seems like that's the way they fail, not a drop today, 5 drops tomorrow, etc

Are water pump failures really that prevalent in the 997.1 ?

I remember reading in another thread on preventative maint that it was a significant problem in the 996 but not nearly as bad in the 997 ? This was based on dealership stats.

This being said, I will probably replace mine 60K'ísh.

All water pumps are going to fail. It's just a matter of time.

Now that 997.1s are getting some mileage on them, we will start seeing a failure pattern.

Your plan sounds good.
