Or ask BMW directly why the slap the M badge on everything. I just saw an M235i yesterday. What is that? It's either an M or it isn't. It's either an S or it isn't.

I have no idea why anyone would do the S. I mean it's not even that big of a jump like it usually is with the BMW M cars.

Thanks for all of the great responses. I am suspicious as well given the big price cut and how long the dealer has had the car. A PPI and DME is needed to figure things out. Nothing out of whack on the CarFax...which does show the car as a Base. The Ford dealership ad also lists the car as a Base...I just had a WTH moment when I looked at the pics of the car and saw the S badge.

I just need to get over there before a less informed buyer walks in and throws down a check for $35k with no questions asked.

I tend to agree with Macster.

But that being said, an old friends bought a Mustang Saleen almost 20 years ago for under the price of a normal Mustang ... primo condition. Why? Because the GM dealer that had taken it on trade didn't know how to pronounce Saleen. This would not have happened at a Ford dealership. I suspect this 911 would not have happened at a Porsche dealership.

But allow me to repeat, I tend to agree with Macster.

Well...there is no after your post, so I assume you are serious. Going to try and get over there tomorrow after work.

Kind of OT...but where in the hell on the Island do you get that TT out of third gear? You must have access to an abandoned landing strip somewhere.

Have fun at Honolulu Ford.

I bought my FJ Cruiser from them last year. Same situation...low miles, price drop, couldn't sell the thing. I did end up buying the truck from them, basically because it was so low mileage and I wanted it, but it wasn't pleasant. They pulled the 3 window paper form out, made me wait 20 minutes while the seals guy talked "to the manager", whom I eventually got into a pretty heated conversation with for an additional 20 minutes. You will also be treated like you have have a 550 FICO score, given a hard sell on an aftermarket warranty, and be required to wait while they get a FAX from your insurance co.. Also be aware "delivery prep" means spraying every square inch of interior in strong strawberry-smelling greasy stuff, and getting junk mail flyers in the mail for life.

On the plus side, I also think thats a steal on a 997.2 here in Hawaii. Another local note, Fletcher Jones (Porsche of Hawaii) will no longer perform PPIs on cars, it will have to be done by an independent.

Uninformed dealers definitely make mistakes: I bought my first 2006 S brand new from The Collection in Miami (impressive dealership). The day after taking delivery I noticed it had factory installed stainless steel doorsill guards mistakenly proclaiming "Carrera 4S". The dealer provided new stainless steel "Carrera S" entry guards but I never got around to installing them. After two years I traded the car in at a CarMax store. Several months later I was filing the paperwork and noticed the Carmax valuation form was for a Carrera 4S. At first it didn't make sense, until I remembered the doorsills I never got around to replacing...

Karma is a bitch though: I didn't expect to have another 997 Carrera S and a few months ago I gave those doorsills away to a friend. Now I have '06 C2S #2 in the garage and I wish I still had those sills!

IslandS52 - LOL I never sit in the dealer and negotiate with them, I don't have time for that. I usually went to the dealer test drive the car and get the sale man business card, then go home. I work by offer them a reasonable price and let them do the haggling while I am in the comfort of my home. FYI - I bought my M6, Range Rover and wife C63 that way.
Reef - I think you want the car more than I do, I won't compete with you
As for my 997TT, I owned a lot of high performance cars because I love the look and the feels, if I want to open up my car I take it to H3 with a few friends who would be a couple miles ahead of me looking out for traffic and HPD. We live on a small island, so I take safety very very serious.

Seems like a good deal, not a great deal.

Pros
- low miles
- 19 sport classic wheels
- aftermarket exhaust

Cons
- base 911 (not really a con... It's still a 997!)
- fake S badge
- doesn't seem to have many options -minus the makassar wood. Explained below
- it's not a 997.2 (as another poster wrote)

A guess why the price - the Makassar wood trim. It's probably a trim that will turn off potential buyers when they see the pics and in photos it comes out cheesy looking. But in real life the Makassar looks darker and works with the black interior. I know cause I have the same interior and was hesitate when I first saw the pics until I saw it in person.

OP give the car a shot...may be a hidden treasure for you.

Anyway, I've been amongst the "employed" again for two years now and even though Oahu is not the optimal locale to buy, nor drive, a sports car, I can't help but check out the limited options that occasionally pop up on da Island.

The 2008 997 below has been on the market for about two months at a Ford dealership that recently dropped the price by about $9k. Plenty of good info on Rennlist about how to check out the vehicle (much appreciated), but why would an owner badge a "Non-S" as an "S"? Tried a search but did not find any related posts. Might not be a big deal, but just curious and wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. Any thoughts on the car would be a bonus.

Aloha...and thanks in advance.

1. Badging a car something its not... lame lame lame...p---- envy...

2. Never underestimate the degree of stupidity of people at a car dealership. It can be utterly, totally incredible.

Just to close the loop on the charade and provide a few giggles...

Monday: Pulled up dealership website to send email for an appointment to see the car and noticed price was again listed at $46k. Sent inquiry about price... $36k vs. $46k... and was told "someone" had made a mistake in posting the lower price to various websites. However, dealership would honor the lower price if I brought a copy of the lower price ad. Scheduled appointment to see the car for Tuesday after work.

Tuesday: Received an email that "Management" had made a mistake with the $35k ad, but would honor it for ONE DAY ONLY. Sent reply that at a minimum, I would need 2 test drives and a PPI from a qualified Porsche mechanic and that no way that could happen in a day. Thanked them for their time but I was no longer interested.

Wednesday: Received reply that a Product Specialist would like my phone number to talk about the car. I replied that I'd be more than happy to correspond with the PS via email. Received reply asking when I could come and see the car. Replied Thursday after work ONLY if the price was $36k. Received reply that dealership will honor the lower price if I bring the ad showing the lower price and that I would be meeting so and so. I replied great...see you Thursday at 5:15.

Thursday: At 12:15, received email stating that car had sold.
And even better..."Was I interested in any of their other used inventory?" Replied "No thanks". Received reply (and this is great) "We will keep you on our list and inform you when we get another 911 into our inventory". What could I say to that?

A bit disappointed that I never saw the car and perhaps I played my cards wrong. My last dealership negotiation was very easy and pleasant...this one was like dealing with 5th graders. On the positive side, my desire for a Porsche has been rekindled through the experience...as effed up as it was. The selection here is just so limited. I'll be in SoCal for a week soon and might take a look around for something to ship back. Kind of a PITA, but perhaps worth the effort.

Again, mahalo for all of the responses. The knowledge and experience here is incredible.
