Oily window streaks
Minor annoyance. I clean the car, go for a drive, roll the windows down, then get oily/greasy streaks on both driver and passenger side windows.
The 996 forums say something about a regulator needing to be replaced, is there no other way to remove these smudges?

Sounds like you need to drive for longer and let it dry properly before winding it down. Also, try flush the door with quite a bit of water when rinsing. I think it's the shampoo collecting inside the door.
I get marks if I drop the windows soon after cleaning. I tend to give it an hour or three before doing so these days.

I never heard that the regulator is about to go... new on on me.
I get them and they they appear thicker and thicker as time goes on. I just had the door completely apart, and I just can't find where the heck this is coming from! Really weird.
Normal charm.

Apparently it's a common problem with 997s--and one that Porsche has made little or no effort at fixing throughout the model run. It happens to me, too. When it happens to me, I have not noticed that it is related to washing the car. It's just extra annoying when it happens soon after washing the car since it's more noticeable then.
For all of their engineering prowess, there are several items on these cars that seem to have been designed on a Friday afternoon during Oktoberfest.
There have been window regulators on most cars since the 1930's. You'd think this wouldn't be a difficult thing to get right on a hundred thousand Dollar car.

Yep. Have had it on all three 997's I've owned and have brought it up with my SA on all three. He keeps saying everyone bitches about it, Porsche have known about it since 2004 but as you said, they've made no effort to fix it.

Same issue here as well. Bugs the crap out of me. Car is spotless, roll down the window and get small streaks. definitely not from washing because it happens even a week after washing and it happens every time I roll the windows down. I clean them each time and each time happens again. I was worried at first thinking it was scratching my tint from the inside but then realized it was not scratching since it always wipes off.

BMW's have had the same issues with window regulators for a long time. I'm sure Porsche doesn't make or design the regulators, they just buy them. Also, a Porsche 911 probably doesn't have the R&D spend to justify $100kr. It's just priced at a premium with a huge margin. I bet more R&D is spent on a similar priced S-Class then a 911.

My 996 and my 997 had that issue. My 991 does not. For what it’s worth, my 996 continued to have the same issue after a new window regulator was installed.
