Default Road Trip - Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway

I'm visiting an old college buddy of mine in Greensboro, NC this week. Instead of flying or driving straight down, I've decided to take a few days and take the Porsche (2006 Cab). It'll be back roads most of the way down, and something quicker on the way back. I've got the time and it's a beautiful time of the year here in the east for a road trip.

The plan is to drive 4 to 5 hours each day, and take 3 or 4 days getting there.

Day1
Wilmington, DE - Harpers Ferry - 141 mi

Day 2
Harpers Ferry - Front Royal, VA - 43 mi
Front Royal, VA - Charlottesville or Lynchburg, VA - 190 mi

Day 3
Charlottesville or Lynchburg, VA - Greensboro, NC - 240 mi

Return - US 29 most of the way back

If anyone familiar with the area has any ideas, tips, hotel, restaurant or town recommendations, please let me know.

Photos when I get back!

Lots of cops in those areas. Be careful as they love to pull over German sports cars. The limit on skyline is painfully slow and its enforced.

Charlottesville is nice. Monticello is a required stop. Lots of great roads in the area.

That is a beautiful route. Enjoy, be safe, and post pics as soon as you can.

For a side diversion take RT 33 from Harrisburg to Elkins if you get a chance. That's one nice twisty road with good pavement and little speed enforcement

Yeah, that's what I hear. It's not my intention to turn Skyline Drive into the Nurburgring, but 35 or 45 is unreasonably slow!

I'm hoping to do an overnight in Charlottesville, and I hear Lexington is nice as well.

Thanks Rob, will do.

If you have the time, I highly recommend route 42 west of the BRP...practically uninhabited, great twisty road and no LEO's. Over the last 4 years I took 3 motorcycle trips south from DC to Birmingham, Fontana and Memphis and this was always my preferred route on the return leg... those that traveled with me always requested we do it again.

Agreed on 42 & 33- great roads & if you need a good stop for lunch checkout Jack Brown's Burger and Beer Joint in Harrisonburg (one in Roanoke too). If burgers aren't your thing, next door in Harrisonburg is Billy Jack's Wing Joint (same owner with damn good beer list and food).

the owners and Mrs. Rob grew up together.
cheers, and enjoy my state on the way to NC!

Just drove blue Ridge on Tuesday. It was closed at the Cherry Lane NC exit for road work
We got off there. We were headed SW. We proceeded to drive 441. Elk had started to come down at the Cherokee nation site. Enjoy

Got back from the road trip a few days ago. The weather was nice enough to drove mostly top down. The scenery was beautiful, the roads were fantastic, and I didn't see one single cop on the back roads. I did see plenty of dead deer along the side of highways, especially in northern Maryland. Thanks to everyone who chimed in with suggestions. Here are a couple of photos:

That first pic has got to be one of the best I;ve seen in these Forums. I mean the matching colors of the Mts and Car-like a reflection in water but in reverse.

Nice.

Thanks soltino! The original photos are even better, but the compression in photobucket really does degrade the quality of photos.
