Do the MPSS's have the large rim protector bead like the RE050's?

Same bead, but in either case not much protection from curb contact.

MPSS didn't have rim protector on my 996. Those have tried Bridgestones RE050, where they quiet? It's between these and MPSS.

ADias, you mentioned the N2 version, but I can only find reference to N0 and N1 (which I have on my car and like) on the Bridgstone website. Am I missing something?

My mistake. I meant N1 instead of the still available N0 or unrated.

Thanks for pointing that out.

What are those alternatives? Bridgestone tread wear rating is 140.

Now...you can't really go by these ratings as they are not exactly standardized.

I still stand by my post....Yokohama AD08R is a great tire for a sports car like a Porsche and is often over looked.

BFG Rival, Toyo R1R, Hankook RS3, AZENIS RT615K...140 got legislated out of SCCA for autoX so all of these tires are now 180 or above. I run R1R's on my hot rod Miata and had them on a 964. R1R's are great in rain as well with heroic levels of dry grip (more even than the Yoko you mention) but the tread compound cannot be driven below freezing...and I can tell you from personal experience that even 50 degrees is dicey.

I'm not arguing that these sorts of tires are not great for sports cars, since I run them myself. But comparing this tire to a MPSS is a little bit of apples/oranges. Here in AL I can run the MPSS three seasons, I have DSW's for winter. I would consider the AD08R as a two season tire...around here.

My opinion is that the MPSS is THE max performance summer tire on the market.Though I would not run them in cold weather.

I know you're not arguing...we are just talking..it's all good.

I haven't looked in a few months since I was tire shopping for a sporty everyday tire for my GTS...but I recall that the tires you list above did not come in 235/305 19" for 997 cars or even 18" sizes to fit our 997 cars.

RE050 is listed as a 140 tire. Yokohama AD08R is listed as a 180 tire. Toyo R1R I know doesn't come in 18" or 19" sizes for our cars.

The Yoko AD08R I have found to be a great street tire with great grip and also works just fine at the AutoX or light track day....better than MPSS for me at least since my GTS is not a everyday car and more of a weekend fun car, go to dinner type of deal.

I track it with 18" Nitto NT01.

I recently switched from MPSS to AD08R. I agree the AD08R does very well on the track for a street tire, considerably better than the MPSS. However, the tradeoff is the AD08R is harsher and noisier on the street and probably wears quicker. If your driving is almost all street, I would just go with MPSS. If you do a fair amount of track time, then go with AD08R.

I should also say that I've used the RE-050A. IMHO it's not in the same class as the MPSS or AD08R for either street or track.

Luckily I don't have to worry about cold weather in south Florida!

Guess I'm still Miata centric when it comes to these sorts of tires, hence the ignorance of sizes larger than 15's. I run 225/45/15 R1R's on my supercharged NB. They cost me less than 150 bucks a corner. That's pretty cheap for that sort of grip. You should see the looks I get when I drive around a much more expensive car. It's a brutal little car though...when I win the Boxster GTS from the PCA raffle I'll sell it.

I know, I know! You didn't ask about the Michelin PSS or the PS2 but while at the Euro autofest recently, I talked to the Michelin folks at length. They were telling me the new PSS is quite a bit more tire than the prvious PS2. They have agreed to keep the PS2 tire in production for a given time frame (due to a certain auto manufacturers requirements) so that folks who want to stay all original with their Porsche can, down to the shoes it wears. They went on to say the new tire (PSS) is better in tire life, road noise and grip both wet and dry than the previous PS-2. I asked why so much cheaper? He indicated they had come a long way in the manufacturing process since the PS2's design 10+years ago. Me? My next set will not be N spec I'm afraid, but will definitely be Michelin...
