KJR50 asked the right question.
Just who are the "some people" telling you a new torque converter is needed?
AFAIK, squeaking is not a Tip (or PDK) failure sound. Not saying the sound can't be due to a transmission problem, just that if it is it is a rare failure symptom.
When lightly applied brakes can squeak. They can squeak at low speed even if they are not applied at all.
My advice would be to get the car to a qualified Porsche tech and have him give a listen and then you listen to what he has to say.

Brakes can also squeek more or less when turning one way or the other as the load on that corner of the car changes just enough to make the pads lightly contact the rotor more or less.
What year is the car, how many miles, oriiginal brakes or have they been replaced? What many people don't realize is when brakes squeek or squeel, the noise is actually coming from the back of the bad vibrating on the piston(s) in the caliper, not the surface where the pad material meets the rotor. Cross-drilled or slotted rotors can make noise at this location, but it's not a squeek or a squeel - much lower octive and sounds more like a light scraping.
If a brake job has been done, it's possible that new brake dampeners were not installed. These have metal prongs in the back that actually snap inside the pistons and then stick to the back side of the brake pad. This prevents the harmonic that makes the squeeking sound.
As the other guys suggested, if you're not knowledgable about brakes, braking systems, and how to service them properly, just take it to a Porsche dealer or Indy mechanic and they'll be able to figure out where the noise is coming from and how to correct it.

The car is a 2006 c2s. 56000 miles with full porshe service history. I was told by two local garages that it was the torque converter that had started to break up inside. Does anyone know what company makes the original torque converter and do they fail? Many thanks

997 gearbox
thanks for replies have recently spoken to a local gearbox specialist and they are saying transmission and not not torque converter? is it possible to remove the gearbox only and leave engine in place from the underside? any tips welcome
