Default Thoughts on replacing PCCBs

PCCBs on the track don't make much sense to me, so I'm looking for options. It seems that I can do the following:

1. Remove and sell PCCB calipers and rotors
2. Sell PCCB rotors, but run Brembo steel replacements
3. Install and run Stoptech Trophies front and rear

In the past, I've run Stoptech Trophies and have had nothing but success and this is the option I'm leaning towards. Would love to hear any thoughts you might have.

Interesting idea. What kind of price would used PCCB's fetch?

What's wrong with them on the track?

No idea what they sell for, did a few searches but didn't see any prices.

The brakes are great, but the operating costs aren't. I go through one to two sets of cheapo $20 rotors on my Miata a year. I don't even brake much!

If it were me, I'd keep the 6 piston PCCB Calipers and just change to steel slotted rotors and appropriate track pads. I believe Suncoast sells a rotor kit that does exactly this (not sure of the rotor configuration though - 1 piece / 2 piece, drilled / slotted, etc).

If your PCCB setup is off a 997 C2S or C4S, I might be interested in purchasing it complete if the price is right and you decide to do a complete replacement. The setup I need would use 350 mm rotors in the front and rear. I believe GT3 and Turbo setups use a 380 mm rotor in the front and 350 mm in the rear.

These are the rotor part #'s I'd be looking for (written on hub).

Just swap out the PCCB rotors for PFC or Girodisc rotors. The PCCB calipers are the same as the GT3 red calipers...just the paint color difference.

No need to replace the calipers, they are great...just wrap up the PCCB rotors and save down the road for when you sell the car.

To make GT3 caliper fit on Carrera S car you will need Turbo rotors and those are 350mm. This will get the rotor offset correct to fit into the caliper. I run GT3 6 Piston caliper up front and OEM Turbo rotors (350mm) are what fits. Also Girodisc has 2pc rotors that work great too. FYI this is exactly what the Rolex Grand Am cars ran.

Thanks for the input, some more thoughts.

The Brembo PCCB replacements up front are $2,795 and the rears are $2,195; comparatively a set of StopTech 380mm and 355mm replacements are $720 and $620. That's nearly a $3,500 a rotor change! and personally I don't think the PCCB calipers are that great.

I'm leaning towards ST for a few reasons, probably the most important I like how the ST Trophies feel, but what I like even better is how quickly I can change the pads.

WHY don't you think PCCB calipers are great? They are proven to be fantastic...

At any rate, I would only get rid of them if you can find a buyer willing to take them off your hands at a good price. Let's say you can swap the whole thing for a brand new GT3 steel set of calipers/rotors/pads... then that makes sense.

"Great" and "fantastic" are subjective. IMO, it's the overall package that is important to me:

-aftermarket/customer support
-pad selection
-cost of rotors
-ease of pad change
-whether or not any continued modifications are required (i.e., modifying pads each time)
-performance (ability to sustain repeated high speed, fade, pedal feel, ability to modulate brake)
-"futureproofness" i.e., ability to modify brake system if required, when the car ultimately ends up as a track only vehicle: changes to caliper to reduce pad knock back, titanium shim kits, titanium pistons, etc

If I had an endless pocketbook the PCCB, I'd have no problem running the PCCBs. I'm not saying they do not perform, I'm saying for my specific use case they do not fit.

And finally, I wouldn't buy GT3 steel calipers or rotors, the ST Trophy kit is far superior in ever single way. My two cents at least!

FYI...yes Stoptech and Brembo and PFC complete brake packages are awesome...these are 100% race car parts. However for a street car and DE use and PCA style racing the GT3 (red) PCCB (yellow same calipers anyway) 6 piston fronts and 4 piston rears along with either OEM 350mm rotors or Girodisc rotors are way more than enough for this type of use. BGB and Run Bum racing used this OEM Porsche factory brake package to win Rolex GT Series Championships.

However if you feel that you need to buy something from Stoptech or PFC them by all mean let me spend your money but please post pictures after the install! :-)

This got me thinking, what do a complete set of PCCB calipers and rotors go for these days? Obviously I'll have to check the rotor thickness.

porsche said the pccb are supposed to last 200k. doubt u'll ever see that many miles but to be honest i wish i had them. the amount of brake dust on stock pads and rotors is unbelievable. i've never seen it this bad on any car including my supra, sti, s13. and all those cars were track cars.

i'm going to change my rotors and pads with hawk hps to see if that help.

Thanks,
Sid

I believe porsche checks the condition of the PCCB rotors by weight not thickness.

For exclusive street use that may very well be possible.

I think I saw that somewhere too, not sure though. It'd be stamped on the rotor, no? Weight, or thickness?

Seems a bit ridiculous to me...buy a race inspired car, but don't expect owners to track it?
