Default Average MPH ?

I just left the garage after resetting the service reminder with the Durametric. In checking the engine info I noticed I had just over 1000 hours, 1006.8 to be exact, on the engine. With an odo reading of 53,908 miles it works out to an average of 53.54 miles per hour. Has any one else checked their average mph over the life of their car?

That does seem really high. One would have to do almost all of the miles on the highway traveling above 70 to get an avg speed of 53 mph.

Any track history? If you aren't the original owner might the engine have been replaced?

I'm not a daily driver with the Porsches. All my cars have had an average MPH in the low 50's. I'm rarely, if ever, sitting in traffic. The cars don't sit and idle to warm up either. Start and go. Highway and deserted country roads for me.

I have a 997.1 C4S and the average speed was 33MPH during the last DME scan (@ 17K miles). I expect it to go down a bit now that the car is in DC.

There are so many variables that go into your average speed, it's hard to know for sure how the car was driven unless you are the original owner.

It would be nice to be able to average 50+. There are too many red lights around where I live. If I were to run up to a red light at 70, slam on the breaks, sit for 3 minutes, then quickly back to 70, it would take 15- 20 minutes of driving at 70 to average 50+. Sadly I am in the 30's.

Seems high - I do a fair amount of highway driving and have averaged about 27mph over the last 6 years. To average 50 wouldn't you have to have 1 minute at 100mph for every minute at idle - just seems strange.

For a 2 minute window. Yes.

Look at it this way. Say 2 hours on the highway with the cruise set at 70 mph. Very common for me. Even if I were completely stopped for 45 minutes I'd still have an average speed of 50.

Same example. Stopped for 30 minutes and the average shoots up to 56. And I'm never sitting still a fraction of those examples.

I live 15 miles from the nearest town, with a population of around 10,000. If it weren't for the 11 traffic lights in the 3 miles to get though this town the average would probably be in the 60's

Almost all of my driving is on deserted country roads and state highways with a 65 mph speed limit. All of the Interstate (freeway miles) probably average over 80 mph (75 to 80 mph speed limits) to keep up with traffic. It's not uncommon to have a trip average of 70+ mph from my house to Boise or Salt Lake City, Utah!

Good point, Chris. And OP's post back to mine suggests he may indeed be blessed with lots of open road to keep the speed up!

Lots of open road, but it's a lot of straight road miles to get to a road with curves!
