I asked the auto club (AAA) to bring gas when the flatbed was dispatched. They asked me how much fuel was left. I said, "Quarter tank, but have a funny feeling it's the fuel". They said, "We don't send gas with tow trucks; if you want gas, we dispatch a service truck first. If the gas isn't the problem, then we dispatch a flatbed, so you could turn this into a 4-hour wait for a tow truck."

Well, golly... being that it was 1 a.m. , I went with the safest choice.

Hey, back in the day, I had a Shelby Daytona that I drove on 'low fuel' so much I burned the bulb out. LOL. I don't think I know what any of the low fuel lights look like now, because I always remember a time when the low fuel light in my Daytona would burn its image into my brain!

From now on, 1/4 = EMPTY in my P car. Lovable quirk? Hmmm... maybe...

The fuel pump will like staying covered by it's "coolant".

If the battery gets discharged enough the gas gauge can lose it's calibration.
This happened to me 8 years ago on track, 100 miles from home. Some lessons you never forget!

Is it just me or is it with you all too--whenever I here a tone/beep/bong in my car, I can feel my adrenaline hit and my blood pressure and heart rate go sky high and the hunt for the cause starts as I check the dash, computer, screen for the answer... very uncomfortable. No ugly surprises yet.

This started with my BMW 550i

I hear ya on the 'coolant' part, but we're talking about a hair under a quarter tank, and I had no prior knowledge the gauge was off.

Something is wrong with your gauge. These things are quite accurate. And don't forget the electronic thing that tells you how many miles before you run out of gas. That is quite accurate too. If yours is not, you should get it fixed. No telling if this quarter tank thing will stay that way or if it is subject to fluctuation. Like when it says you have 1/2 tank in a couple of weeks and you wind up out of gas again.

I was preparing for the worse looking thru the thread, you're very lucky!

In general I try to fill up before the low fuel light comes on but it has in a few occasions so it seems to be working properly in my car. Will keep this in mind though if this ever happens to me. I agree something still wrong you should have gotten the low fuel light, I wouldn't chance it next time.

I just finished reading the owner's manual of my new-to-me 997.2 C2S cover to cover, and was surprised to see the following:

Range on remaining fuel
The range on remaining fuel is continuously recalculated
during the journey based on the fuel level,
current consumption and average consumption.
The more the fuel level falls, the more spontaneously
the display reacts. For this reason, the
range on remaining fuel is not displayed if less
than 9 miles (15 kilometers)
.

When the fuel level is really low, you'll still get the low fuel indicator on the fuel gauge, but the miles to empty display in the OBC apparently goes away.

Dont feel bad, in my BMW just two weeks ago it started running funny just before the house. I made it home but spent the next couple hours diagnosing the problem. It was only after putting my lawnmower gas in and driving around normally until it started fluttering again that I came to me. The gas gauge coincidentally also said just below a quarter tank and no light.

Remember the days when you have to diagnose the stuff yourself.
Gas, spark?
You checked your own oil and coolant.
Now we all need lights or a warning of some kind.
Whats next? A system that tells you that you need air in your tires?

Funny tire story. We car pool with a mum around the corner for school drop off. She pulls into the driveway in her big GL benz. I mention that her front tire looks a little low. She tells me that there was no warning light on her dash and that it was fine. She loads my kids and off she goes. 3 blocks later she calls me. Light just went on on her dash "check tire pressure". You cant teach instinct.
