Default Backup camera

I'm confused and could use some help from anyone having experience.
I have a 2007 997.1 C4S and am desiring a backup camera that ideally displays through the PCM screen.
I have two inputs from aftermarket installers;

1. PCM gets sent somewhere to have an interface installed and many aftermarket camera can connect. Cost upwards of $2500 and downtime while modifying.

2. Plug in a "module". then connect any aftermarket camera to it. Not sure of price but installer did not need to "send unit out" for mods. Plug in is reversible in case I wanted to convert car back to stock.

Pretty big variance on details. I already know all the helpful advice like "put the top down" or "have wifey act as my flagman". I can appreciate the humor!

Anyone with experience have an opinion?

The best info I got when I looked is this is to replace the PCM 2.1 with an aftermarket head unit. Alpine makes probably the best options here with a professional install unless you're really good with that sort of thing. Of course with the Bose system you either have to re-wire your amp and/or replace it or go with a Nav-TV M.O.S.T adaptor so figure another $500 on top of what ever aftermarket head-unit and camera setup.

After looking at all the options to upgrade the PCM 2.1, I decided to go with an Alpine head unit.

I don't think it would be worth the cost if you are just looking to get a backup camera but for me it added a lot of functions. If you want I can take a few pics of the head unit and the backup camera mounted on the back of the car

The functions that I got that my car did not have before:
- Nav
- Bluetooth
- Sirius
- backup camera
- Ipod integration

All in I spent about $2600.
- Head unit - $900
- M.O.S.T adaptor - $700
- Sirius -$100
- camera - $250
- camera mount - $150
- install $500

The part I like about the camera is that it has a 190° horizontal viewing angle. This means that when you are backing out of a parking spot in addition to what is behind you can see if anyone is coming from the left or right.

Check out the Cayenne forum, there is a very long thread on this. I installed the backup cam for less than $100. It's not very hard. Dynavin just came out with a replacement head unit for the PCM 2.1 for $800. Plug and play, works with Bose systems with nothing else to buy. Everyone seems extremely pleased with the unit and demand is very high so they are sold out right now. Only thing it doesn't have is satellite radio.

Humm, I like that Dynavin; what's the quality like on their stuff? One thing that bugs me about going with an Alpine is I have to buy the MOST adaptor, (given my experience with Nav-TV I think their part is overpriced,) or I have to re-wire the speakers and/or replace the amp.

My PCM's Cd doesn't work but do have the Nav-TV iPod and Bluetooth adaptor a installs which works most of the time. I have an older iPod interface that can't be software updated and sometimes locks up. Only turning the car off and on will fix the issue, it doesn't happen often but when it does it's a pain. I could care less about XM so that Dynavin might be the ticket.

I can't speak to the quality because I don't have one yet due to them being sold out. The guys that have installed them on the Cayenne side seem to be real happy with it. There are some Dynavin threads with install and pictures, etc... There are two distributors in the country and I'll be ordering one as soon as stock is replenished which is supposed to be mid July "now".

i thought about going aftermarket as well but to be honest, i was worried about the resell value. the adapter for $600 also drives the price up where honestly the only i wanted was a backup cam or sensors. The stock GPS isn't that annoying. I honestly don't mind using the *****. Dialing isn't that bad either. and this comes from a person who always had aftermarket head units. i have a dension and tooki in the car. now that i got the dension upgraded it works pretty well. the menu is still funky but i can stream music via a2dp, directly, or usb now.
