i probably need something a little more secure than this, which is why I was visiting this thread but obviously has devolved into a dog-in-the-car thread.

I use a harness with a lanyard purchased from Amazon. The lanyard has a shock absorber and has a buckle on one end which uses the seatbelt receptacle.
