Default DIY: 997 Rear Seat Delete

Hi Folks:

If you search the web, you'll find several DIY's for a rear seat delete but I thought I'd show mine and have it added to the DIY sticky.

The process is relatively simple and requires 40 and 25 torx bits plus a flat head screw driver to remove the plastic caps.

1. Lift off the seat bottoms which are held in place with velcro.
2. The seat backs are held in place by screws on both sides plus a center screw.
3. Using a flat head screwdriver, pop off the plastic covers on the two side screws.
4. Using a 40 torx bit, remove the screws. These are firmly installed and I used a 1/4 wrench for added torque. See figure 1 and note that I had the bit square to the screw when it was removed or else it would have been stripped.
5. Pull forward and up to pop off the plastic cover of the center screw as shown in figure 2.
6. Using a 25 torx bit, remove the center screw. This was also firmly installed so I again used my 1/4" cheater bar.
7. Lift the seat backs up as a unit as they can't be separated until the side brackets are clear. See figure 3 where the've been lifted and are lying down in the foot well area. Notice the center bracket and plastic cover are seen on the bottom while the center mount is visible near the middle of the picture.
8. Separate the two seat backs to expose the center rod as shown in figure 4.
9. Save and label the pieces for future use.
10. See figure 5 for the new look rear seat delete.

I'm still debating whether to remove the seat belts but will probably leave them as they'll be nice if I need to carry a third person for a quick trip.

Also, Suncoast sells a $200 rear seat delete hardware kit. Anyone have any experience with this? I think two of the pieces are used to cover the seat belt but can't be sure. See http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...ode=9972s_seat

Comments appreciated. Dave

That link takes me to a $549 product described as you say, but not $200. Did you get a corrected price?

(Edit: BTW, Porsche p/n for the kit is 000-044-801-63, and $500+ is the current price as I checked three sources.)

It's been a few months since I wrote that post so my memory is a bit fuzzy. But if I wrote it as $200, then that was likely the posted price at that time.

For the bolt covers the SC kit contains, I guess they will sell exactly zero of them at $500+.
For that price I'd expect some sort of insert that provides some organized storage in the wells of the seat, and then a flat deck surface above it all.

So, did some more asking about the kit. Sunset Porsche in OR, sent me this info:
"I noticed that if you by the parts individually, your price is $218.04, plus shipping. The two black caps are $31.27 each, and would have to come from Germany, which is 2-3 week away, or you can expedite the order for an additional $10, and it would cut the time down to 3-7 business days. The two silver caps are $73.90 each, and are 3-4 days away. The back bearing shaft is $7.70, and is a week away."

Of course, I ordered individually!

Great to know. SO they charge about $280 for putting the kit together for you.

Seems like it. But that's why I like doing business with Sunset. They did the extra digging for me.

I bought the GT3 rear carpet from suncoast and it was only $200. All the kit does is cover the holes. You can buy the carpet and get a all one piece carpet w/out and holes.
You need to pull up the carpet and remove the hardware that is remaining , take the seatbelts out of the c pillars, there are solid GT3 replacements for the Cpillar trim.

I think it would be nice to fabricate something like the RSD in my 993....

I've asked before but didn't get an answer. Once you remove the seats, what do you do if you pull the damn velcro tabs out of the carpet. SOB's and held in by soft plastic tabs that connect to the plastic pegs on the velcro pad; three of mine pulled out when I pulled the lumbar pads off.

I believe at least one poster had the same problem, anyone have an idea?

I talked to Ryan about this and the rear carpet is $283 plus there is a 4-5 week wait time because it comes from Germany.

I REALLY want the natural grey GT3 carpet instead of the "rear seat delete kit" they sell, makes more sense to me to not see any plugs or hardware holes in the carpet...

I just fixed mine this past weekend when I had other interior pieces off the car. You need to lift up the carpet under the seats to get access to the wide plastic washers that hold the 2-wide and 3-wide velcro piece down. The hardest part is getting to the washers. They were reusable so nothing needed to be replaced on my car. To lift the carpet and get access to the bottom, the rear seat backs and side panels need to be removed. Then peel back the carpet from the top and bottom outside corners, one side at a time. No need to fully remove the carpet.

when I removed the bottoms of my rear seat the little Velcro strip (the larger one) came unclipped. now it won't go back in and is very loose in the holes. any suggestions on this?
