Curious indeed. Posters name I sims fail and they have 2 posts. Sounds like somebody is bored and decided to bring up this old debate yet again.

If I'm wrong,
I'm sorry for your loss.

same 997.1 engine across all years, just upgraded larger bearing with less chances of failure.
with that said, this is one of the rare ims stories with an immediate happy ending.
what i don't get is why wouldn't porsche just pay for the LN upgrade for an original owner with a low milage car? a bearing swap has to cost much much MUCH less then replacing a perfectly good low mileage engine with a brand new one.
just seems like a huge waste to me.

It's numbers. The bean counters have factored in the expected failure rate within the parameters and calculated that it's cheaper to replace that small percentage of engines than to pay for a fix on all of the cars.

Just got confirmation from the dealer that Prosche is covering it 100%. Earlier the dealer thought I would get a completely new engine. Looks like those don't exist anymore so they will be ordering individual parts and assemble the engine. I have asked them to provide me a list of parts being ordered and reused. Let's see what I get.

I did heavy research a few months ago to better understand what is involved with a remanufactured engine, and there is very good information in the below thread that outlines what was new on at least one remanufactured engine. The thread lists the following parts as new:
*new coil packs
*new fuel injectors
*new intake and throttle body
*new crankcase (indicated by casting marks)
*new heads
*new cam covers
*new starter
*new alternator
*new water pump
*new headers
*all new fasteners/hardware/hoses/harness
*new pulleys/idlers/etc.
*remanufactured PS pump (indicated by an X in the part number)
*crankshaft appeared to be new

What dealer are you using? It sounds like they haven't run into an engine replacement like this before?
