Default Scratch Repair

So I have this 3/4 inch scratch on my car drivers door from the prior owner. Want to get it fixed. Looking for community advice on what to do and what cost to expect.

Thanks!

Look up Dr. ColorChip. It won't be perfect but it will look pretty good after the repair. You may also find a detail shop in your area that uses this product.

I had some scratches like that on my Cayenne, deep ones down to the primer on the rear bumper. I brushed on some Dr. Color chip on thick and you cant see them at all unless your really looking for them. I think it works better on stuff like this than those little rock chips on the front, I could never get those to come out right. Of course your scratch is right in your face when you open your door so it may be more visible.

Thanks, Alan. Product looks worth a try for sure. Since this scratch has some depth to it would you recommend multiple applications?

Appreciate the recommendation.

Yes' it will likely take multiple applications if you want to get it flush. For the final app I use a 2" square cut from a plastic squeegee with a piece of old T shirt wrapped around it. Apply the paint and then use light pressure with the liquid when removing the excess paint. It is possible to get it level. Just a little extra effort is required

Langka is another DIY product that you can try although it does require more patience to get a close match and proper blend.

A little off topic, your trim could use some 303 protectant. Looks really dry.

Bumping this back up to the top for some more community wisdom. Got a body shop quote for this repair and...wait for it...$1200!!! Question is now this. If you were a buyer of a 997would you rather have a properly done and documented scratch repair, even it it means a repainted door, or better to just touch it up for substantially less money but still be able to see where the scratch is?

Thanks.

I think I'd touch it up. If you sell the car there is no need to convince someone why a panel was sprayed.

i would just buy the oem paint pen that has both touchup+clearcoat. avoid repainting panels (especially metal) if possible... front/rear bumpers not as big of a deal to repaint imo.

Go the Dr.Colorchip route. Getting a panel painted is a last resort IMHO.

Jeez - I'll road trip out to Colorado and do it for half that! On a serious note the shop might report the repair to Carfax which it should not IMO.

get a mobile body repair guy. they usually cost about $400 and it will look perfect

otherwise, the DIY methods are acceptable to save money. however, ur scratch is a very visible area and it would still bother me since it is still detectable. had the car been 10-15 years, i would go with the DIY route
