I was just about to recommend checking for oil in the intake. I had a BMW with an "oiled-type" filter like a K&N, and the oil would get airborne and hit the maf. That confuses the whole system and it behaves exactly as you described. So for the others, go back to stock paper air filters and clean your MAF and intake. That should fix you up.

The intake air temp sensor is also integrated into the MAF, so contamination of the MAF can also impact how the car adjusts mixture for air temp. One thing to pay attention to is when you first start the car in the morning do you get the normal high-idle event for a little bit, like around 1,200 rpm before it drops fldoen to the normal idle speed of around 800? If not, that might be the MAF. There's also a coolant temp sensor that the engine bases a lot of its adjustments off of. An OBD2 tool like Bluline will show you the real values on your smartphone that your car is seeing - the dash gauges aren't that accurate - the coolant temp gauge isn't even a gauge - it's an idiot light disguised as a gauge.
Brake switch and clutch switches are other possibilities.

I’m having this same phantom power cut issue.
Mine is a 06 997 c4s manual. Haven’t tried driving in non sport but in sport it seems to randomly cut power between 4k and 6k rpm… no error lights or anything. Tends to happen on faster acceleration but can even be just be cruising at 4k and then bam slight power cut then if I feather the gas pedal up and down it kicks back in….
Anyone have any ideas?
dropping off to my local p car mechanic to see if they can figure it out. Will report back here.
