Default 997.1 pcm 2.1 navigation problem

About a half year ago, we bought a 2007 997 Carrera. The previous owner imported the 997 from the US to the Netherlands. The original US navigation dvd doesn't work over here.

We bought the Porsche and the software was updated and a unofficial 2012 navigation DVD was inside. Unfortunately, the navigation doesn't always operate. Sometimes the map won't loud or we drive in a ''full grey map'' without any roads

Does anyone have a suggestion or does know what te problem could be?

PCM info:

SW-versions 4.0

Unit: Navigation System

Is the map DVD disk for your area?
Try a disk from someone else if you can, you may need a true area disk.
Who updated the software? In USA or there?
So it works OK, part time?

When you state "unofficial" DVD then I think you have your answer.

I have a copy of a European DVD for the 997.1 cars but it is from 2006--probably too old now to be any good.

Go to Porsche and see what they can do for you.

I know with Honda/Acura, the nav systems they have for US cars vs Canadian cars operate on different software platforms so you can't just put in a Canadian disc into a US car and have it work.
You would have to have the Canadian or US nav system for use with their appropriate discs.

For Porsche, I believe the US/Canada unit may be the same but highly unlikely that a unit from the Netherlands would work in North America.
Check with the dealer first.

The units are not different from region to region. I ran European database disc in my US car while in Europe and then simply put in a US disc for USA and Canada. Porsche strives to keep things common to the maximum extent possible. Saves on inventory expenses.

Check to see if your PCM is getting the sats. Could be a lose antenna. I believe you can see how many sats it pick up on the maps screen after you push the settings button.

When I bought my car it came with an 'unofficial' disk (DVD copy) and it worked perfectly. It had 2007 written on it with a sharpie so wanting slightly more recent maps I trolled web sites and found a guy willing to burn me a copy of his 2009 navigation disk. It updated my Nav software and provided me with updated maps and works perfectly.

Could be a region issue cause the satellite triangulation over different continents varies and if you don't have the right map set, it may not be able to accurately triangulate your position causing the said issues.

Worked on mine

I wasn't looking for a software upgrade, just updated maps and thought that's what I got but when I put the disk in, it went through a full software update process.

Has anyone else been able to upgrade their 997.1 with 997.2 disc?

Yes, the map DVD is for Europe, so the area is true for sure.
The previous owner updated the software over here.
Most of the time we drive on the map but sometimes we ''drive out of the map''.
What acutally almost doesn't works are the (voice) commands.

I can't believe that would be the problem, because most of the time, when I start the navigation it says: Please insert the naviagtion dvd, so it more looks like a software problem.

Did you only inserted the 2009 DVD or also an update cd?

And then some questions:

Should it be necessery to use update cd level a to b or cd 2 when i try to update to another navigation DVD year?

Does it make any sense whether I burn an other dvd map on DVD+RW, DVD-RW or DVD R?

Note that when he says he has a 2009 disk, it must be a 2009 disc specifically for the PCM 2.1. You can still buy PCM 2.1 updates from Porsche. The last I was aware of for PCM 2.1 was 2013. You can buy them from your dealer or SunCoast.

However, you cannot take the discs (notice the plural) from any 997.2 (2009-) because in PCM 3.0 they did away with the navigation DVD in the car and store the navigation data on a hard drive inside the PCM unit. The PCM 3.0 discs have to be loaded from a laptop at the dealer and do not stay in the car. This discs also include all of the PCM software updates. I just updated earlier this month and am running PCM 3.0 software version 2.24 and the maps that Porsche advertises as their 2014 maps.

My detailed post on this is at http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...date-info.html

Also regarding the PCM 2.1 map updates. It is my understanding that the later maps, even when made for the PCM 2.1 unit, won't work properly unless you also update the PCM firmware to a later revision that is compatible with those maps.

Good point Strom, I have no idea if I got a PCM 2.1 disk or a PCM 3.0 disk because once again it was a copy and all I was expected is updated maps. Safe to assume it was a PCM 2.1 disk. Suncoast and other locations have updated disks for 100's of $ which I think is redonculous. I would just use my phone as my GPS if I had no other option, Google Maps is waaaaaaaaaaaay better to begin with and free
